Psychopathology Social Work

A diagnosis is powerful in the effect it can have on a person’s life and treatment protocol. When working with a client, a social worker must make important decisions—not only about the diagnostic label itself but about whom to tell and when. In this Discussion, you evaluate the use and communication of a diagnosis in a case study.

To prepare: Focus on the complex but precise definition of a mental disorder in the DSM-5 and the concept of dimensionality both there and in the Paris (2015) and Lasalvia (2015) readings. Also note that the definition of a mental disorder includes a set of caveats and recommendations to help find the boundary between normal distress and a mental disorder.

Then consider the following case:

Ms. Evans, age 27, was awaiting honorable discharge from her service in Iraq with the U.S. Navy when her colleagues noticed that she looked increasingly fearful and was talking about hearing voices telling her that the world was going to be destroyed in 2020. With Ms. Evans’s permission, the evaluating [social worker] interviewed one of her closest colleagues, who indicated that Ms. Evans has not been taking good care of herself for several months. Ms. Evans said she was depressed.

UN Human Trafficking Report

Throughout the semester, you will find and then analyze articles that exemplify any 10 concepts (or 5, if you’re doing Service Learning) from our list of options, which are drawn primarily from Best’s book. If there is a concept that you want to explore that isn’t on this list, please consult with me to see if we can make it a possibility!

An article can only be used once, and are ideally from this calendar year. Articles should be found in newspapers; in news magazines such as Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report; or on online news sites such as CNN.com, FoxNews.com, and ABCNews.com.

Note that you can select a troubling condition of interest to stick to all semester, or you can switch it up constantly and have each of your analyses be on different troubling conditions. Whichever approach you choose, I recommend that you find a troubling condition, or multiple troubling conditions, that you’re passionate about and want to learn more about during your internet searches for articles!

For each analysis, please be sure to explain/define the concept and make clear connections between the concept and the article. Quoting should be kept to a minimum, and each analysis should be about 1.5-2 pages double-spaced. Check out this sample analysis to get a sense of what’s expected for each of these analyses.

  4. Explain the meaning of this finding, “Studies consistently indicate that drug markets like American society generally, reflect our nation’s racial and socioeconomic boundaries.” By citing these studies, what larger point is Alexander trying to prove?

Role of Gender and A Man Box

This past week we focused on gender. Gender is a fundamental social division. All around us we see differences between men and women (and girls and boys). The way they dress. The activities they engage in. What they say. What they want out of life. We see gender differences in the college classroom — who tends to major in what subjects? We see gender differences at the workplace — who tends to hold positions of power and authority? We see gender differences in the home — who tends to do the majority of housework? These social arrangements, which create and sustain gender differences, end up having powerful effects on the lifestyles and life chances of individuals.

ESSAY
In class on Friday, we watched a TED Talk by Tony Porter, where he focused on what he calls “The Man Box.” According to Porter, what is The Man Box? What are its core elements? Why are men afraid of getting outside of The Man Box? When Porter says, “my liberation as a man is tied to your liberation as a woman,” what do you think he means by that?

Capital Punishment

Objective: Use examples from the movie to explain the politics of Texas’ justice system in application of criminal proceedings and the nature of corrections policy to illustrate meaning of the statement “lock em up” mentality; and create an argument supporting rehabilitation or incarceration as the best correctional policy approach to dealing with criminals in Texas.

Instructions:

When writing your essay, respond to the prompt thoroughly, and completely. Essays must be a minimum of 1.5 – 2 pages in length, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point font, and written in Times New Roman.

Your response should be your own thoughts and analysis. Citations may be formatted in APA, MLA or Chicago style, as long as they are consistent throughout. Research and resources should be incorporated with scholarly application. I.e. used as examples or evidence to support your analysis. Make sure to use complete sentences, and proper grammar. Your response to the prompt should focus on analyzing the information you gather and used to provide examples that support your assessment

“A” papers should include a critical analysis of the video’s by applying at least 1 example from each film to support your position.

Finding Balance Between Work & Family

For this paper, you will interview someone who works in an occupation or field that interests you. Perhaps you are interested in exploring a field that you plan to go into, or a field/job/work situation of someone you know (a parent, friend, relative). The key will be to integrate into your analysis one or several class concepts. Thus, you will use concepts learned throughout the course and apply them to a real-life working situation. 6 full pages, word count at least 2000.

You may draw from any of the concepts we discuss in class. Some of the more popular choices include:

  • Emotional labor
  • Work in a sex-typed occupation (i.e., a female corrections officer or a male nurse)
  • Work/Family balance, or work as a stay at home mother or father
  • LGBTQ identities at work
  • Tacit skills and coping with boring or routinized work
  • Racial and/or ethnic experiences and/or inequalities in the workplace
  • Service work – issues involved with interacting with customers
  • Blue collar work – women in blue collar jobs; devaluation of blue collar work
  • Labor & union organizing or workplace resistance
  • Immigration experiences

I have attached to this handout a basic description of interviewing strategies. Please refer to that as you construct your interview questions. You may write up specific interview questions to follow or you may want to have an outline of topics to cover. Either way, be sure to include questions that will allow you to explore the topic(s) you have chosen for this project.

Below I have provided a basic, suggested outline for how you should structure your paper.
