The Civil War began partly over the perceived right of a state to secede from the Union. Constitutionally speaking, it is true that there is no ordinance or amendment that allows secession. However, what was South Carolina’s argument concerning this reality? What were Lincoln’s rebuttals? Did Lincoln mention slavery as a reason to go to war with the Southern States? Keep in mind that the Civil War started between South Carolina’s declaration of secession and Lincoln’s inaugural address. You don’t have to answer all the questions I just posed.
