Protein is one of the six essential nutrients. The body’s need for protein is depended on what stage of life you are in and how healthy you are. Protein works with the other essential nutrients to do its job. Protein contains nitrogen. The building blocks of protein are amino acids (Table 6-1). Only when we eat adequate amounts of carbohydrates and fats, can protein be available to fulfill the functions of protein. Excessive protein in the diet does not enhance the functions of protein. Consuming more protein than you require will result in protein being burned for energy or stored as energy for later use. Certain types of athletes and runners may require more protein than the RDA of .8 / kg.
