Scenario

You work as an educator in a diverse preschool setting at ABC Early Learning program. You are requesting materials from your program leadership to enhance language and literacy development with the children in your care. To ensure that your request will be granted, you must provide a detailed rationale for your request, including how the materials will help achieve your goals for children with diverse language needs or dual language learners.

Instructions

Choose six (6) materials that can be used during play, group time, and routines to support language and literacy development. These can consist of homemade or store purchased materials. No more than two (2) children’s books can be included.

Barriers to critical thinking

In week 1, I asked the class to reflect on the barriers to critical thinking and analyze which ones they have committed. Much like critical thinking barriers, it is almost impossible to avoid fallacies when your argument becomes long enough. To that end, please respond to the following:

1:  Think about a disagreement (in person, over the phone, or heck, on the internet) that you’ve had with someone where a fallacy occurred:  What was the fallacy? Who committed it? What effect did it have on the argument?

2:  Fallacies are sometimes described as ‘faulty reasoning shortcuts’. When you’re pressed (or stressed) in an argument, which fallacy do you tend to fall back on, knowingly or unknowingly?

Your textbook, as well as this week’s handouts, have specific terminology related to logical fallacies. The reading this week discusses spectacle events held by the nobility in Western Europe, particularly France and Spain. The concept of the spectacle event never left, and we are surrounded by many examples of such events in modern times. For this discussion, please share an event that fits into the definition of a spectacle. Make sure you describe your example event in detail, and point out how this event fits into the spectacle category.

You will need to post one time with your example of a modern spectacle event and post again in response to someone else. Please remember you are graded on both posts. Your response posts need to be engaging and go beyond just a few sentences stating things like “great point”, or “I agree with you”. This is a discussion forum, so think about it just like that, as a discussion. Simply agreeing with someone or liking their post does not set the stage for a discussion.
