systemic lupus erythematosus

systemic lupus erythematosus

Part A

Ms. X, a 32-year-old Hispanic woman, has had a history of intermittent pleuritic chest pain and joint pain for the past several years. Recently, she went to her physician because she noticed that an erythematous, butterfly-shaped rash had appeared on her face. Further lab tests indicated protein in her urine. Her blood test indicated the presence of numerous antinuclear antibodies, especially anti-DNA, and mature neutrophils containing nuclear material. A diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was made. (Refer to Chapter 7, Immunity)

  1. Discuss possible reasons why SLE was not diagnosed earlier.
  2. Discuss how the presence of antibodies can cause such widespread damage in organ systems.
  3. Discuss treatments for SLE and a prognosis for the patient in this case.

Part B

Mr. F, age 46 years, has had a persistent unproductive cough for several months that did not respond to cough medications. Recently, he has developed a productive cough accompanied by fatigue, anorexia, and night sweats.

Examination indicated abnormal chest sounds and weight loss. A chest radiograph showed a small cavity and infiltrate, the tuberculin test was positive, and the sputum sample contained a small amount of blood and numerous acid-fast bacilli, confirming the diagnosis of active tuberculosis. (Refer to Chapter 13, Respiratory Disorders)

  1. Discuss the pathologic changes occurring during the development of active tuberculosis.
  2. Discuss the transmission of TB and the conditions predisposing to the development of TB.
  3. Discuss the treatment of tuberculosis and the precautions involved for health care personnel coming into contact with the patient.
  4. Suggest how family members or co-workers can protect themselves.

blood physiology

blood physiology

Part 1

Juan, Mrs. Cane’s 11 year old grandson, has just recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Based on the type of leukemia, his doctor suggested that a bone marrow transplant might be his best treatment option.

1) Based on you knowledge of blood physiology (specifically, blood cell count, blood cell functions, blood cell disorders, the role of blood cells in maintain homeostasis), explain clearly whether or not it would it be important to closely monitor Juan’s blood cell count for each of the following, especially since Juan is not getting chemotherapy (at least not yet):
(i) RBC
(ii) WBC
(iii) Platelets

Part 2

Last spring, Manuel was diagnosed with late stage kidney disease. His doctor said it is most likely a result of constant vibrations form the heavy machinery he worked with for over 20 years.

Because of Manuel’s symptoms, he is constantly short of breath with the slightest physical exertion, and is now unable to work. Manuel’s feet are constantly swollen, he is unable to move about and he is very depress.

2) Based on your knowledge of blood in general, and blood cell anatomy and physiology in particular, would Manuel’s blood test reveal that he has polycythemia or anemia? Give a clear explanation for your choice of disorder.

The Strengths finder Survey

The Strengths finder Survey

In this module, you have been asked to complete the Strengths finder Survey. This survey is one of many rigorously tested, well-known personality profile surveys in the market and provides an opportunity for you to consider some of the strengths that you bring to your career next steps.  This survey is one tool to support your process of self-understanding.  It is not exhaustive and does not provide a full picture of who you are.

Please reflect on your Strengths finder results, which detail a number of character strengths that are unique to you. In this journal, please reflect on the following questions:

  1. Were you surprised by the strengths assigned to you? Which strengths seemed particularly accurate?  Which strengths (if any) seem incorrect?
  2. Briefly describe a time at NLU that you may have used one of the strengths assigned to you by the survey.
  3. Are there other strengths identified in the Strengths finder 2.0 book that were not assigned to you today that you would have used to describe yourself?  In what way have you demonstrated that strength?

Instructions:

  • Your journal should be approximately 300-350 words in length and should address each question in the assignment directions.
  • Please refer to the rubric associated with this assignment for detailed guidance about expectations and grading.
  • Please submit this assignment according to the directions on your syllabus.

Technology

Technology

New technology and tools will undoubtedly shape nursing practice.  “Research suggests that between 8% and 16% of nursing time is spent on non-nursing activities and tasks that should be delegated to others” (Robert, 2019). As a result, new innovations may minimize the time spent on these non-nursing activities and tasks to further support and strengthen patient care.

One such technology is the use of robots. While nursing robots are not yet readily available, researchers have earned millions in grants over the last decade researching and developing AI and robotic innovations to improve healthcare and nursing practice. From clinical practice to patient support, the future seems endless with possibilities.

For this Discussion, you will explore various topics associated with innovative technology and your healthcare organization or nursing practice. You will consider how you might utilize these advancements, as well as consider how these advancements might influence nursing informatics.

To Prepare

Post a response to your blog for each of the following:
  • From the five topics: AI, Machine Learning, Genomics, Precision Health, and Robotics, assess the applications of the technology, noting the potential benefits and potential challenges of the innovations. Be specific.
  • Appraise the potential of the innovations to improve healthcare practice and related outcomes.
  • Explain whether these applications integrate Big Data? Why or why not?
  • Explain the difference between AI, Machine Learning, Data Mining and
  • Deep Learning as presented in the Bini (2018) article.
  • Why do these differences matter and how relevant are they for Big Data?

Role of terrorism and torture

Role of terrorism and torture

The film depicts an uprising in the city of Algiers, in French-controlled Algeria, in the 1950s. The film is not a documentary, but it does a fair job of reenacting the events that took place and shaped the anti-colonial struggle in North Africa. The film is two hours long, so plan ahead to find a time to watch it and complete the discussion forum assignment until the due dates (see below). It may be useful to take notes while watching the film.

To successfully complete the assignment, students need to:

1) Open a discussion thread responding to at least two of the guiding questions suggested below.

Guiding Questions

1- Did you like the film? What caught your attention the most? Why? Feel free to really open your thoughts about the film.

2- What made Ali Lapointe turn from a petty thief and street troublemaker into an armed political activist? What does Lapointe’s transformation tell us about the lives of colonial subjects and colonial society in the 1950s?

3- How does the film depict daily life interaction between Algerian and French people in Algiers? What do the checkpoint scenes show about colonial society?

4- Who were the Algerian rebels targeting at the beginning of the film? And later? What made their strategy change?

5- What is the role of terrorism and torture in the events depicted in the film? Who committed terrorist acts and conducted torture sessions? Why?

6- How did Colonel Mathieu, leader of the French paratrooper division sent to control Algiers, plan to defeat the uprising? Did he evaluate correctly the extent to which Algerians wanted to change their condition? Why? In What sense did Mathieu and the French win the battle but lose the war?

7- The interviews of Colonel Mathieu to the press reveal a lot about the history of new imperialism and the post World War Two process of decolonization. What is the role of the press in the events depicted in the film? What does Mathieu expect from the press? What do the interviews imply about the relationship of French society and government with Algeria and other colonies, such as Indochina, which the French had lost just before the events depicted in the film?

8- In moral terms, how would you evaluate the actions of each side of the Battle of Algiers? Explain your thoughts.

Strategic approach to employee training and development

Strategic approach to employee training and development

Defining the strategic approach to employee training and development allows organizations to align training and development to overall organizational success. Organizations may provide minimal training for job-specific skills or they may opt for a wide range of training and development opportunities to foster human talent development and ties to succession planning.

Research the purposes and approaches to strategic training and development decisions, and address the following:

  1. Define the strategic nature of employee training and development.
  2. What criteria might an organization use to determine a strategy regarding employee training and development?
  3. Explain the difference between a small family-owned business and a multinational company in their approach to strategic training and development for employees.
  4. Analyze the relationship between training and development, succession planning, and organizational success.
  5. Why is multicultural/diversity training important in organizations
  6. What are some legal considerations (employment laws and labor laws) managers must consider in selecting staff for training and development opportunities

Instructions

5–7 slides with speaker notes of 200–250 words per slide (excluding title and reference slides)

You must include a minimum of 2 scholarly references.
