Vision for the Future of Nursing

When exploring the vision for the future of nursing, pause to reflect on your ‘why.’ Doing so will allow an opportunity to revisit your purpose. It is important to think of which aspects of nursing we are passionate about in order to discuss how to make an impact on specific patient populations. The art of Nursing is the way in which the profession becomes manifest in the pragmatic care. Nurses need to attend to the patients’ needs in a manner that depicts a good level of academic excellence.

In 2010 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Robert Woods Johnson Foundation (RWJF) published a report indicating recommendations that could help better nursing as a profession. Some of these primary issues addressed in the IOM report state that the nurse should practice to full potentiality and to the level of their training and education. It is important for nurses to attain higher levels of training and various education via the upgraded education forums that tends to promote academic advancement. Therefore, improving the education system is imperative in ensuring that the delivery of health care will be safe, quality, patient-oriented, and touched in all areas more so on the issue of primary care and overall public health. The main purpose is to make sure that all Americans can access much-needed health care services. To ensure that these objectives have been met, nurses need to be at the forefront in contributing and ensuring the maximization of all opportunities that can guarantee better health care to the citizens (Dobbins, 2016), Nurses are required to fully partner with physicians and other health professionals that reside in the United States. It is clear that not all nurses start their profession with the intention of being a leader (Dobbins, 2016). However, the strongest leaders are needed to transform the US health care system. The transformation will ensure that the nurses can adapt and take new roles in the new setting hence the need to incorporate leaders with indispensable characteristics.

the ethical distress that occurs when working with the underserved population in a small community hospital

REPLY1

Hi MariaL,

I can relate to the ethical distress that occurs when working with the underserved population in a small community hospital. I work in a small community hospital where we lack many resources and equipment that the larger hospitals have. We have doctors that order medications or treatments needing certain supplies and sometimes I have to tell the doctors that we don’t carry what they ordered and offer an alternative. The doctors get very frustrated because the patient’s health gets compromised due to lack of resources.

Aspects of medically underserved communities face more ethical and moral dilemmas than adequately served populations. These communities face problems such as lack of resources, low budgets, lack of medical training opportunities, and lack of medical providers. On top of these issues, some communities are forced to become untrusting of their healthcare providers due to their inability to fully treat the necessities of the population which, as stated before, stems from the inability to procure appropriate resources most of the time (Lo & Brody, 2007).

Some communities that are underserved are actually part of major cities. For example, the homeless population in San Diego, or even the lower-class community who doesn’t quite make enough money for insurance. They all live in a large area with healthcare nearby but that doesn’t mean they necessarily have access to it.  We did an assignment on the Health Resources and Service Administration a couple of weeks ago. They are a great example of resources for this population and those who don’t have access to high quality healthcare (HRSA, 2020).

Exhibiting poor quality in performance and apathy in goal attainment

My topic of choice is “Not speaking up when unethical practices become evident”. One of the strategies I used is typing “not speaking up and unethical practices”. This search yielded specific articles and books that I can use in both the web and West Coast library. In the West Coast library, to further narrow my results, I simply clicked on the filters such as if I want articles or books or if I want it peer-reviewed, which is one of the most important search features because it gives me articles that have been evaluated by members of our profession. This gives articles more credibility.

The topic I chose to discuss is: Exhibiting poor quality in performance and apathy in goal attainment. This sounds like a very interesting topic which I would like to explore more. In the West Coast Library search field, I used Boolean operators and entered “and” as the specific terms so that I am able to decrease results to ensure I narrow down my choices. I searched “Exhibiting poor quality performance and goal attainment”, I could also have used “or “to find alternative terms if needed to increase my choices.  It was more difficult when entering “or”, for this specific topic.

I will choose a peer reviewed article as these articles are scientific journals and have meaningful research. I am interested in exploring accurate conclusions.

features of alcoholic liver disease

Robert is a 68-year-old who has dealt with alcoholism for over 30 years. He has cirrhosis and is anemic. His appetite has declined, and he regularly complains of abdominal pain. Recently, while preparing himself a sandwich, he cut his finger deeply with a knife. The wound bled profusely, and he used a kitchen towel to stop the flow. Refusing to go and seek medical assistance, he put ice on his finger and wrapped the towel around it. He sat down in his recliner with his hand over his head and fell asleep.
