● Research the background of your Congressional representatives based on your address listed with CU – two senators and a member of the House of Representatives. Write an essay. Start by identifying all three of your representatives (My representatives are Senator John Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, and Rep. Collin Allred). Give a brief background on all three of them.

● Then, pick the representative you are most interested in and explain why they interest you.

● Background info on chosen representative:

Find out about his previous occupation(s), political experience, family, income, education, and other relevant demographics.

● What percentage of the vote did your chosen representative receive to win in their last election?

● What are two policy issue areas your chosen representative is interested in? How do these areas reflect their ideologies?

Aristotle defined tyranny as an illegitimate form of government by one individual that tightly controlled every part of life and government. Adolf Hitler is the most notorious tyrant. Using a totalitarian society from the past or present, discuss how the state and its leader attempt to impede citizens from exercising their rights. In your discussion, explain some components of an “ideal citizen,” consequences of voter apathy, and ways the state controls the citizen.

In the essay:

• – Describes the three ways, violence, propaganda, and scapegoating, that leaders use to keep control in the country.

Write a paper on a current event article that discusses restrictions on freedoms by a totalitarian state or an article on ethnic conflict within a nation. Summarize the article and explain why this issue is important to the global community. What outside influences might help change this issue? How? Is the article neutral? Why or why not?
