You have two options for the final paper, and each are worth 100 points. Option 1 would be to compose an ethnographic, qualitative, phenomenological, sociological analysis of your own “self” concept, including the factors which have influenced it (your upbringing, experiences, interactions, memes, socializations, conflicts, successes and failures). Option 2 would be to select a social problem of your choice (homelessness, poverty, racial profiling, etc.), and to design a detailed intervention to address it; this could be a non-profit organization, a volunteer program, anything you can imagine! Both options will draw heavily from course readings (course concepts and theoretical tools), lectures, and discussions and have no predetermined (prefabricated) structure. I’d advise NOT simply summarizing the full content of the course in this paper. This paper should be roughly 4 times as long as the weekly response papers, as it is worth 100 points.

For this assignment, you will conduct Internet research about poverty in the United States and create a photo essay that depicts the economic struggles that many Americans are facing today. Photo essays consist of a collections of photographs or images that portray a particular message. The idea of this assignment is to be creative, so don’t let a new type of assignment hinder you. Your photo essay should have an organized theme, linking two photos in some way in the essay.

Theme ideas include a certain area or region (urban or rural), lost jobs, a personal story, the recession, immigration, economic impact of globalization, low-paying jobs, slums, kids and poverty, hunger, elderly and poverty, single parents and poverty, health care and poverty, drugs, or other social issues that may be associated with poverty. To this end, you are expected to write a 6-8 page final paper that illustrates your cumulative knowledge gained. This will serve as your final exam. For this paper, choose a contemporary piece of entertainment (released in 2008 or later) that highlights a particular social problem. You can select a film (not a documentary), album/music, television show (not a docu-series), etc. Write a reflective analysis, relating it to the various topics we have covered in class.

heory Reflection: Through the past thirteen weeks you have explored decades worth of ideas. In this assignment, you are being asked to contemplate the question “What have I learned and how does it best apply in the context of the career I’m interested in, or the life I’m experiencing?”. You must respond to this question with either a 3-6, page essay. The goal of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to put the entire course into perspective. (APA Formatting but do not include an abstract. Make sure you include a reference list and in-text citations where needed.)

You must discuss which of the classical or grand theories makes the most sense to you and why. Part of this discussion should be applying the theory you choose to a social problem from the list below (a macro explanation) as well as applying the theory to your own social location (a micro perspective). You must also choose one other theory from the semester from a different theorist and school of thought (i.e. do not use two functionalist theories instead use a functionalist and a symbolic interactionist, or conflict and symbolic interactionism, etc.) and apply it in a similar fashion. Lastly give a critical perspective to each theory you have chosen. Discuss what seem to be the weakest aspects of the theory. Use a social problem as a tool to explain the weaknesses of the theory. Give one solid example of how the theory does not explain everything.

You do not need to define the theories you select. If you apply and discuss them correctly, I will see that you understand and can define them. Focus the paper on applying the theories you choose to a social problem and your social location. The same is true with the theory you choose to critique. Explain why this theory does not seem to offer solid understanding of the social world and your position in it.

Make sure any claims you make regarding evidence are supported with source material. You should provide 2 examples or explanations, for each theory, to display its use and application.
