‘Variations in health: What can the Department of Health and the NHS do?

 

1. Discuss the kinds of explanation for these observed variations in life expectancy

– Life expectancy at birth is currently around seven years higher in the registrar General’s social class I than in social class V.

– Children in social class V are four times more likely to suffer accidental death than their peers in social class I;

– Of the sixty-six major causes of death in men, sixty-two were more common among those in social classes IV and V combined than in other social classes;

– Of the seventy major causes of death in women, sixty-four were more common in women married to men in social classes IV and V;

Choose a common myth associated with managed care. You may use one of the myths discussed in this week’s reading assignment, or come up with one on your own. Write a 2 page analysis on why you think this myth came about and why it still may be prevalent today. Explain to what degree the myth is based on facts, truths, and misunderstandings.

Summarize the evidence from research that counters or supports the premise of your myth. Conduct research in at least two sources, not including your textbook. Cite your sources using APA style guidelines.

Your review should be between 750-1200 words. You should summarize the film but make sure that your summary focuses the key points to your argument to recommend (or not to recommend) the film. The film summary should not give away the entire plot or storyline rather it should be used for context and the main body of the film review should highlight key course concepts from the module and the overarching goal of global health.

Although there is not a set formula to follow when writing a film review, the genre does have certain common elements that most film reviews include which our outlined below. The strongest film reviews will include some current data to characterize the global health problem being addressed by the film. This information should come from the course lectures and/or textbook. The current explanation of the global health problem could be included in the introduction, throughout the analysis, and/or in the conclusion.

What examples of advocacy do you see in your own nursing practice? List and discuss 2 examples.
