The Devastating Explosion in Beirut Philosophical View

hi

this is a final project for my Philosophy class and it should be 3 pages about something kind i did to the people.

here are the requirements for this paper. the professor said:

I am assigning the final a bit early so you have more time to work on it. Our final project will lie in my favorite branch of Philosophy, in Ethics. It is, at base, the way we live moment to moment. It reveals our character in a most telling and intimate manner, and lies at the foundation of who we are. I am asking you to take on a project in applied ethics – how it plays out in the day to day.

I had the good fortune to have a student tell me the following story. He was quite humble and matter of fact about it, not in any way boastful. He said that he and his girlfriend bought $40 worth of treats and usable items and created a beautiful gift basket. Then they meandered around town until they found a random person in apparent need to gift it to. He felt so good about doing this simple, but profound, thing in the midst of the holiday season. I was blown away by his account. Particularly his simple telling of it, and of the surprising joy he received in return for this gifting of a stranger.

My personal core ethical belief is that all that matters in human life, is kindness. The rest is detail, or superfluous.

Your final assignment is to do something really, wondrously kind. It can’t be for someone you know or are related to. It can’t be a donation to an organization. It can’t be volunteering for an organization you already have engagement with. It has to take courage and significant effort on your part. It need not require spending a penny. It may be finding a homeless animal, taking he or she in, and finding a good home for her or him. It may be mentoring a youngster that is in dire need of support. It may be cleaning up a natural area in town that has been trashed.

the Dangers of Modern Technology Philosophy

Paper length: 1000 – 1500 words.

Paper Prompts: Write on ONE of the following topics:

(1) The paradox of analysis is suggests that conceptual analysis is either false or uninformative. Explain the paradox of analysis and your favorite solution.

(2) Explain and defend your favorite definition of technology.

(3) Discuss the pros and cons of human gene patents from an ethical point of view.

(4) Explain the paradox of constitution. Ted Sider distinguishes four solutions to the paradox of constitution. Which of these solutions strikes you as plausible and why? What, if anything, is problematic about your favorite solution to the paradox of constitution?

(5) Explain the Ship of Theseus paradox. Explain the transitivity of identity. Why can we not solve the paradox by imposing a threshold of how many parts of thing (e.g., a ship) may be changed (e.g., 5%) before it is not the same thing any longer? How would you solve the Ship of Theseus paradox?

(6) “There are … no tables and chair, and there are no other artifacts. … Artisans do not create; not, at least, in the sense of causing things to exist. They rearrange objects in space and cause bonding relations to begin to hold or to cease to hold (as in the case of the sculptor who chips away at a block of marble) between objects …” (Peter can Inwagen, Material Beings, Cornell University Press 1990, p. 116). Do you agree with the view expressed in this quote? Explain your answer.

Truth Relative from Culture to Culture Reflection

No access to course materials but use basic philosophical theories and concepts. Citation not required but you need to know the material..not an opinion piece. Provide 2-3 opposing views please and masters level writing. Late work is not accepted. 🙂

Each student will write a final 2,000 word essay on the topic: “Is truth relative?” The student must reflect on their learning over the course of the semester and how they would respond to the statement “what is true for you but what is true for me is true for me.” Is this a valid ethical imperative? Why? Why not? Note: any citations from course texts must be properly provided.

What is the heart of this assignment? This assignment seeks to help the student reflect on a variety of the concepts we have discussed and engaged over the course of this semester. In particular, it will center on one of the main questions we asked in the earlier sections regarding the nature of truth. Some of the questions this revolves around:

Is truth relative?

Does truth change from culture to culture?

Is what is ethical, right, or wrong evolve over time or is it transfixed outside of time.

What is the relationship between culture and what is true?

Ethics during Coronavirus Pandemic

What are the ethics around the coronavirus? What would the different ethical theories have to say about our rights and responsibilities, both as individuals and as a society, in these times? Is hoarding egoistic or just selfish? What virtues are required and what vices should be avoided? Social distancing seems like an obviously utilitarian practice, but what about the economy? What does it look like to treat other people as ends in this situation and what is and isn’t universalizable as a maxim. Is there a risk to our civil rights with curfews, quarantines, racial and social stigmatization, and general mass hysteria? How can you care for yourself, your friends and family, and others?

Authors and journalists are filling the internet with ideas about what we should do and how we should behave in these times. Do research. You will find that, consciously or not, many authors are working from a basis of one of the ethical theories you have studied. Don’t just look at the egoistic, “how do I survive this” articles. And avoid weirdos’ blogs, etc.! Find examples of ethical claims made in accordance with the theories we’ve learned.

Don’t read yourself into paranoia. Take a step back when you need to and get some perspective. But take this seriously, it is important.

Locke and Hobbes Concept of Nature of Man

Choose either Topic A or Topic B. To answer these topics completely, it takes a minimum of 2 pages – 8-10 paragraphs. Use the topic questions and the scoring rubric to see if your draft responds fully to all parts of the question. A complete thoughtful answer is more important than word count.

Topic A:

What is Martin Gardner’s argument for the objectivist view of art? Do you agree? Why or why not?

Use Vaughn’s textbook to help you explain Gardner’s theory and its strengths and weaknesses. Choose an object, performance, or piece of writing as an example, and explain whether Gardner’s theory would classify the object as Art. Do you agree with objectivism about Art or do you find another theory more convincing? Defend your point of view.

Topic B:

Explain Locke’s view of human nature. Use details from the textbook to support your description. Explain Hobbes’s view of human nature, again using details from the textbook to support your description. How do Locke’s view of human nature and Hobbes’ view differ? Which do you think is more accurate? Explain, and defend your answer

Please choose one of the theories we have covered. Explain the theory making sure to expand upon the main points including the strengths and weaknesses, and explain how this theory can aid us in making ethical decisions. PLEASE BE AWARE: This is not an informal discussion post. This is a short essay. I will be looking for detailed analysis of the theory you have chosen. Be sure you have addressed the following:

1. Have you thoroughly explained the theory (Ask if someone who had never heard of this theory would have a basic understanding of it after your explanation)

2. Have you explained how this theory works to help in making ethical decisions ( You may give an example, but be sure tit is brief and relevant).
