Identifying and Engaging Stakeholders for Strategic Planning

Identifying and engaging key stakeholders for a strategic planning project is essential for the overall success of the project. Every strategic planning effort is unique, which makes it imperative for planners to identify which departments and individuals will be affected by the efforts, as well as ensuring that all stakeholders remain engaged throughout the process. Liff (as cited by Sare & Ogilvie, 2010) noted that the complexities of strategic planning make it easy for those involved to forget the most important aspect of the project, which is the stakeholders. The purpose of this discussion will be to describe internal and external stakeholders that should be involved in strategic planning at Mountain View Health Center (MVHC). Strategies will be proposed for cultivating relationships with these stakeholders, as well as an explanation of how their involvement would promote the likelihood of success for the strategic plan.

Mountain View Internal and External Stakeholders

Every strategic planning project in health care will involve internal and external stakeholders. The involvement of stakeholders supports the direct allocation of resources necessary to develop a well-organized plan (Jasti, Livesey, Oppenheimer, Boyce, & Long, 2019). According to Marquis and Huston (2017). A stakeholder is defined as any individual, group, organization or system that affects and can be affected by organizational action (Gholap, 2017). Internal stakeholders within MVHC include those individuals who operate within the organization such as employees, administrators, governing boards, donors, and volunteers, while the external stakeholders are typically those individuals impacted by the work of MVHC such as clients (i.e. insurance companies and payers), professional organizations, and community partners (Seithikurippu et al., 2015). In terms of strategic planning, it is important for all stakeholders who will be affected by the project to be actively engaged. Affected parties can be identified by conducting a stakeholder analysis to determine whose interest should be considered throughout the project because they ultimately influence the project and determine its effectiveness (Seithikurippu et al., 2015).

Main Discussion – Week 4

Main Post

As Mountain View Health Center (MVHC) moves forward with a merger to ensure its community’s access to high-quality care, involving all key stakeholders is necessary to develop its new strategic plan. The next steps for MVHC leaders are to identify the internal and external stakeholders and focus on building these relationships amongst the groups. This discussion post will highlight these essential elements for MVHC to consider and how these partnerships impact the success of the strategic plan.

Internal and External Stakeholders

Marquis and Huston (2017) define stakeholders as the “entities in an organization’s environment that play a role in the organization’s health and performance or affected by the organization” (p. 305). The internal stakeholders of MVHC are the board of directors, physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, and other healthcare providers (Laureate Education, 2013). Companies do not always choose external stakeholders. These external stakeholders take an interest in a company and will influence decision-making (Marquis et al., 2017). External stakeholders for MVHC include community centers, network hospitals, insurance companies, patients, and regulatory bodies (Laureate Education, 2013; Sare & Ogilvie, 2010).

As MVHC explorers a merger with a network hospital to keep the facility operating and providing access to necessary care for its community, stakeholder involvement is essential. This group of diverse people is not only responsible for this significant decision, but also for building the hospital’s new strategic plan after the merger takes place.

Mohammed Bin Salman as A Transformational Leader

Thoughts:

Management is much different than leadership. Management is a power relationship based on formal position in a hierarchical organization. Leadership is inspirational and is not necessarily linked to formal position. Review the descriptions of leadership by the notable people I listed on the power point slides. I particularly appreciate the description made by Bill Bradley. Transformational leaders give the world a vision of what it can become.

Leadership can also be viewed as transformational or transactional. Transactional leadership is closely aligned with the actions of a manager or appealing to a persons hygiene needs while transformational can be viewed as appealing to a persons motivational needs.

Servant leadership is a form of transformational leadership and is advocated by those establishing organic organizational systems.

Assignment:

  1. Identify a person that you believe is a leader. ( Mohammed bin Salman ) From the characteristics of leadership that you have studied identify two leadership traits you identify with this person. In your post identify whether the person you identified is a transformational or transactional leader?
  2. Analyze one other persons posting by saying why you agree or disagree with the person they identified as being a leader.
