Fake News and False Stories Discussion

Need help with my Sociology question – I’m studying for my class.

Introduction

In this paper complete all the required activities and answer the reflection questions. This assignment will help extend your understanding of the unit topics and concepts to applications in everyday life.

Directions

Please respond to all of the questions in paragraph form with the question numbers labeled. You should incorporate concepts from the readings into your answers and cite the readings as needed. The paper should be 2-4 pages.

  1. “Fake news” is a current issue within political and social media. Gergen challenges the idea of truth and a singular reality. Use Politifact (Links to an external site.) to identify a false statement or news story in our current public conversations.
    • Explain the case, the origins of the story, and describe how this misinformation was communicated.
    • How can the concept of social utility and cultural traditions be used to explain the proliferation of “fake news” and wildly divergent definitions of what “truth” and “facts” are in the news?
    • How does the concept of the social construction of reality apply to this case?
  2. Watch the short clip telling the story of a unique animal relationship: The Cat & The Ducklings (Animal Odd Couples) (Links to an external site.)
    • How does this clip relate to socialization and the important of social environment over biology?
    • Using this clip and the assigned readings, how would you debate a friend who claims that “nature is more powerful than nurture” in shaping people’s behaviors and identity?
    • How could you effectively argue that socialization largely determines who we are?
  3. Language as a symbol system is also connected to power. Watch and analyze the following clip of a speech given by Nelson Mandela in 2000 at the World Sports Awards, Monaco (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.).
    • What kind of language and symbols does he use when speaking?
    • What does this language emphasize?
    • What does it conceal?
    • How does it frame the “issues” the speaker addresses?
    • How and why is language an important aspect of exercising power and promoting social change?
  4. Look up the lyrics of two or three popular songs from the past or present that focus on romantic love.
    • Identify and describe each of the songs.
    • What do the lyrics suggest about what it means to be in love?
    • What do they say about what you should notice, emphasize, or ignore in an intimate partner?
    • What do they say about how you should experience and act upon feelings of romantic love?
    • What do the lyrics suggest about what is irrelevant or taboo when it comes to love?

Political Liberalism and Political Conservatism Discussion

The Cost of Economic Growth Discussion

Need help with my Sociology question – I’m studying for my class.

The Cost of Economic Growth

In Chapter 7: The Environment – Part II, Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss the existing tension between development and the environment. Development brings economic growth as well as social and environmental changes. To a developing country, economic growth may be of a higher priority than the consequences to the long-term health of its citizens or its environment. On the other hand, poverty can also harm the environment such as how searching for land to farm contributes to deforestation.

Do wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have responsibilities to the people and environment of that country? Why or why not? Be sure to use examples of existing companies to support your response.

Review the posts of your classmates and respond to at least one other post, offering a substantive comment on that classmate’s position on the issue(s).

How Would you answer this classmate?

Nicole Williams-Turner

RE: Week 10 | Discussion

Hello Professor Boyd and classmates,

The well-being of the people in developing countries is the responsibility of the nation’s government, but assistance from developed countries is an obligation developed countries should honor; after all, they have the resources. Companies such as Nike and Apple manufacture products in developed countries. Nike was accused of lowering labor standards with underpaying and forced overtime- an example of taking advantage of the poor. Wealthy countries such as the U.S should assist developing nations because the citizens of those countries play a significant role in the country’s wealth. The irony behind this week’s question is the rich organization in the U.S lacks care for the employees they hire regardless of the hard work performed. The point I am trying to make is wealthy nations sees the opportunity to build wealth and reduce overhead cost; therefore, they move the business to places where there s no law to protect against accommodations, meager wages, and diversity. The developed countries not only have the resource to assist; they have the know-how to generate change in the environmental issues the countries face.- poor drinking water and lack of education

Future of Feminism Research Paper

I need an explanation for this Sociology question to help me study.

Although the paper is opinion-based, you are expected to present clear, concise, and critical arguments in support of your claim. You are not expected to go beyond the material we have discussed so far in class. However, if you choose to use other sources, be sure to cite them properly.

What is your understanding of feminism? Who is a feminist and who can be a feminist? Discuss the way class and race are part of feminist organizing and theorizing. Use Angela Davis’ essay or Yen Espiritu’s essay as a guide to understanding the intersectionality of race, class, and gender.

Sports as a Social Phenomenon Discussion

I need support with this Social Science question so I can learn better.

Hi there,

Please see the requirements and ruberics. Two pages

This reflection should tie all of the material together based on a theme that you identify, as opposed to just focusing on one particular topic. In the reflection, you will also:

  • Summarize key ideas from the readings, videos, discussions, and course materials.
  • Distinguish what you are most intrigued (surprised, excited, fascinated) by, and if applicable, identify where your understanding is still unclear or you have questions.
