Moral Theory

Moral Theory

Introduction
In this session, you have been considering moral-ethical dilemmas you yourself faced or that you know of that you either resolved or failed to resolve. But hopefully learned from. You may never have given much thought to ethical theory nor what ethical premises/paradigms you have unconsciously held.

You will be focusing on this case for this assignment:

Jane Doe is a nursing student at University X. Jane is in week eight of a course entitled: “Introduction to Ethics”.

For the week one discussion. Jane copied work done by her friend John Doe in the same class two months ago (with a different professor). John told Jane it was okay to use his work as John’s professor never checked any work in the class using Turnitin.com. John claimed to have earned an A on the work also.

In week two, Jane went to StudentPapering.com and paid ten dollars for a week two essay done by a student (not John Doe) who took the same course four months ago. StudentPapering promises that all its archived work is of excellent quality and cannot be detected as copied. Jane then uploaded an exact copy of the work for the week two assignment.

In week three, Jane paid a worker at PaperingStudent.com ten dollars to write for Jane a brand new essay after Jane shared with the worker the essay assignment instructions.
In week four, Jane relied on her knowledge of Esperanto. She felt pressed for time and found an article by a professor from Esperanto on the week four topic. She translated Esperanto into English using Moogle Translate, and the translated text served as her week four paper.

Moral Theory

In week five, Jane was running late again. Jane purposely uploaded a blank paper hoping that she would later claim it was an innocent mistake and not be assessed a late penalty. In a previous course on History, she had done the same (with an earlier paper from the History class rather than simply a blank) and had not seen any late penalty assessed.

In week six, Jane took work she did in a nursing course from a year ago and submitted that for her discussion posting in her current class. She simply copied and pasted the work she had labored intensively on a year ago (even though University X forbids this practice as ‘self-plagiarism’). Jane was confident her Nursing instructor never checked that work using Turnitin.com or another method.
In week seven, Jane copied and pasted work found on website.com for the paper. Jane did not use any quotation marks or other documentation to show the text was not by Jane.

Since Jane’s Ethics professor did not check papers and posting for any issues by using Turnitin.com or another method. The professor graded all of Jane’s work unaware of Jane’s actions throughout the weeks of the class. Jane feels her actions are morally justified both because her economic situation requires her to work too much to devote time to school (although other students are well-off enough to have such time) and her religion forbids cheating. But Jane ignores her religion’s teachings.

Menstrual Cycle

Menstrual Cycle

● A female reproductive years begin around 11 to 13 years of age at the onset of menses

and end around age 50, when menses ceases.

● The average menstrual cycle is approximately 28 years in length, beginning with the first

day of menstrual bleeding.

● Premenarche is the physiological status of pre puberty , the time before the onset of

menses.

● Menarche is the state after reaching puberty in which menses occur normally every 28

days.

● Menopause refers to the cessation of menses.

Follicular Development and Ovulation

● During the menarcheal years, an ovum is released once a month once a month by one of

the two ovaries.

● All ova begin development during embryonic life and remain in suspended animation

within pre-antral follicle as an immune oocyte until the onset of menarche.

● Each ovary contains approximately 200,000 oocytes at the time of birth.

● When a young girl reaches puberty, the hypothalamus begins the pulsatile release of

gonadotropin releasing hormones.

● Which stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to secrete varying levels of gonadotropin(

primarily follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone).

● The luteinizing hormone level will typically increase rapidly 24 to 36 hours before

ovulation in a process known as LH surge.

● It is the LH surge, accompanied by a smaller FSH surge that triggers ovulation in day 14.

Menstrual Cycle

● After ovulation, the ovary enters the luteal phase. This phase begins with ovulation and is

14 days in length.

● During Luteal Phase, the cells in the lining of the rupture ovarian follicle begin to

multiply and create corpus luteum or yellow body.

● The corpus luteum immediately begins secreting progesterone.

● As progesterone levels decline, menstruation occurs and the cycle begins.

Anatomy and physiology of female pelvis

● Two approaches are used to sonographically evaluate the female pelvis: transabdominal

and endovaginal(transabdominal).

● Transabdominal requires a full bladder for acoustic windows. Requires the 3.5 to 5 MHz transducer for adequate penetration.

● An edovaginal examination is performed with empty bladder and uses a 7.5 to 10 MHz

transducer.

competition within the nurse practitioner field

competition within the nurse practitioner field

Since there is competition within the nurse practitioner field, it is very significant that one must market themselves in order to present their professional best to future employers. One of the best ways to market yourself is to create a career portfolio. A portfolio exhibits the framework of an individual’s accomplishments (Weber, 2016).  Initially, I would build my portfolio during my practicums. Through the right mentorship. I will gain abundant knowledge in my specialty as well start positive networking that will be in my favor when job seeking after graduation.

A few strategies, I plan on using within my professional development goals include using professional social media platforms and joining nursing organizations for networking and staying up to date on evidence-based practices. According to Daninhirsch’s article, It’s Not Just What You Know, Corporations are not the only entities that can have a brand; your individual brand is what defines you in your career, and anything you can do to construct that brand is going to work for you in the long run (pg.15).

One of the first strategies that I will do is to try to network more. Due to the Covid epidemic and the frequent upgrades of technology in these modern times, most networking is made initially virtually by social media. I personally like using the professional networking site Linkedin. I have found many professional connections and employers throughout my nursing career through Linkedin.  Networking provides many new opportunities, personal development, collaborative research, policy activism, evidence-based practice, and many more benefits. Covey (2013) describes the importance of enlarging our circles of influence in order to be able to affect change within our circles of concern.

competition within the nurse practitioner field

Another one of my strategies that will help with my professional development goals is by joining nursing organizations such as the Tennessee Nurses Association since Tennessee is where I reside. There are many other nursing organizations I am interested in such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Nurse Honor Guard. Through the Tennessee Nurses Association and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, I can grow professionally by connecting with other experienced nurses and keep up to date on evidence-based practice.

On a more personal note, I am currently interested in joining the Nurse Honor Guard because I really love what this organization stands for. I feel that being in this organization will help me remember why I became a nurse when times seem tough and to remember to remain humble and kind. To remember that it is a privilege to be able to care for someone at the most vulnerable times of their life and to as well appreciate the former nurses who paved the way for me and other new nurses and future nurses.

The Nurses Honor Guard pays tribute to nurses at the time of their death by performing the Nightingale Tribute at the funeral or memorial service (Tobrocke, J.-J.,2018). This service is like a military tribute and officially releases the nurse from their nursing duties. Being able to be a part of honoring another nurse and commemorating them with their families is very special. I feel that nursing is a calling, and one must love taking care of others in order to push through and stay in health care. Nurses, as well as other health care professionals, should always be appreciated because this job is not for the faint of heart.

c chart for patient falls

PROBLEMS 1. A hospital introduced hip protectors to reduce the frequency of injury-producing patient falls. The hip protectors were introduced in July. The following table records the number of injury-producing falls from January through December. Create and interpret a c chart for patient falls. Were the hip protectors effective in reducing injury-producing patient falls?

s Month Falls Jan 5 Jul 3 Feb 5 Aug 3 Mar 3 Sep 2 Apr 4 Oct 2 May 2 Nov 3 Jun 2 Dec 3

2. The director of medical records conducts a monthly audit of 50 medical records to iden- tify coding errors. The Chapter 08.xls, Problem 08–02 tab records the data. National sta- tistics indicate that approximately 15% of medical records contain errors, and in the past the director has found multiple errors in a single record. Create a c chart to analyze perfor- mance. Interpret the department’s performance based on your control chart and identify any issues that should be investigated. Is the department doing a good job?

3. The chief medical officer is concerned that the long lengths of stay at her hospital may be the result of missed oxygen treatments. She has enacted a program to reduce the number of missed treatments. The Chapter08.xls, Problem 08–03 tab, records the number of missed oxygen treatments over the last 40 weeks. The improvement program was introduced in week 20. Was the program effective?

4. Implementing regular nursing rounds has been demonstrated to increase patient satisfac- tion and reduce patient falls. A hospital has collected data on ten patients per month over the past 24 months. The first twelve months the hospital did not have a formal rounding system. During the second period nurses were required to make rounds on an hourly basis from 8:00 AM through 8:00 PM and every two hours from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM. The Chapter 08.xls, Problem 08–04 tab displays the number of call lights received per day for the ten- patient sample. Create a c chart to determine the effect of the rounding system on the use of call lights. Did the rounding program reduce patients’ use of call lights? Are there any issues that should be investigated?

5. To supplement their patient satisfaction survey, End Result Hospital conducts in-depth tele- phone interviews of past patients. The interviews are based on a 1% sample of the completed surveys from the prior month. The sample varies widely due to differences in monthly admis- sions, the rate at which surveys are completed, and the willingness of patients to participate in the telephone interview. The Chapter 08.xls, Problem 08–05 tab records the total number of the patients’ concerns noted by the interviewers. These concerns range from the effective- ness of medical treatment to the cleanliness and comfort of the patient room and ease of parking. The interviewer addresses the same items found on the patient satisfaction survey, solicits additional information for any item on which the patient indicated performance was less than “Good” or “Very Good,” and provides the patient with the opportunity to voice any other concerns. Create a control chart to summarize the results. Are patient concerns stable?
