Prevalence of and Factors Associated With Nursing Burnout in the US

Submit a summary of six of your articles on the discussion board. Discuss one strength. And one weakness for each of these six articles on why the article may or may not provide sufficient evidence for your practice change.

Example of a student’s post

Cimiotti, J., Gandrakota, N., Shah, M. (2021) Prevalence of. And Factors Associated With Nursing Burnout in the US. Retrieved from Prevalence of and Factors Associated With Nurse Burnout in the US | Nursing | JAMA Network Open | JAMA Network

This article examines the survey data from more than 50,000 registered nurses in the United States. And found that nurses who leave their job 31% reported it was due to burnout and those who work in the hospital. And work more than 20 hours per week are associated with greater risk of burnout. This is expected to increase with the demands of Covid-19. The strength of this article is it examines a large amount of nurses in various care settings. A weakness of the article is it did not assess degrees in nursing practice categories.

Glassman, E. (2020) Developing a mentor program to improve support and retention. Retrieved from Developing a mentor program to improve support and retention – American Nurse (myamericannurse.com)

This article examines the benefit of a mentor program that goes beyond new hire orientation. Evidence shows that mentorship can be effective if the unit and its leaders make a commitment to support it. Employees were asked to stay on their unit for 2 years, 70% of nurses were retained on the unit after being part of the mentorship program. Strengths of this article are a guide for success to successfully implement a mentorship program. Weakness of the article is data is not given for employee satisfaction. Or improvement throughout the mentorship program, just at the beginning and end.

Mentorship during the pandemic

Handzel, S. (2021) Mentorship during the pandemic: A community-based hospital’s approach. Retrieved from Mentorship during the pandemic: A community-based hospital’s approach | Wolters Kluwer

This article also examines the benefit of a mentorship program. It was found after just 3 months of a mentorship program that satisfaction scores trended higher than before the program. Job satisfaction also trended higher. While intent to stay did not compare to previous results. Considering the influence of the pandemic on bedside nurses. And the working environment it is important to look further into why intent to stay did not improve through the program. Which was a weakness of this article. A strength of the article is it took place on 8 measure units which allowed a better look into how mentorship can work for acute hospital nurses to prevent burn out. And it gave insight into implementing the program.

The Influence of Leader Empowering Behaviors

Hassan, N., Mudallal, R., Othman, W. (2017) Nurses’ Burnout: The Influence of Leader Empowering Behaviors, Work Conditions, and Demographic Traits. Retrieved from Nurses’ Burnout: The Influence of Leader Empowering Behaviors, Work Conditions, and Demographic Traits (nih.gov)

This article is on a study that was conducted to assess the level of burnout in nurses. And investigates the influence of leader empowering behaviors. The importance of nurse leaders in improving work conditions and motivating nurses to decrease burnout, turnover rates, and improve the quality of nursing care is highlighted. A strength of this article is it included a variety of nurses from 11 hospitals and with at least 6 months of experience to fully assess burnout influences as well as gives insight into where burnout is impacting healthcare. A weakness of the article is not using nurses in different care settings to compare the influence of different workload on burnout.

Kluwer, W. (2020) Leadership’s role in helping nurses during COVID-19. Retrieved from Leadership’s role in helping nurses during COVID-19 | Wolters Kluwer

nursing practice related to Covid-19

This article examines the changes in nursing practice related to Covid-19 and how that has impacted nursing burnout. Moral distress has increased and can be a significant factor in burnout. Possibly threatening the stability of the workforce. Strengths of this article are analysing recommendations for nurse leaders and how they impact bedside nurse burnout. Weakness of the article is intervention results aren’t assessed.

Lagasse, J. (2020) Healthcare workers experiencing burnout stress during to COVID-19 pandemic. Retrieved from Healthcare workers experiencing burnout, stress due to COVID-19 pandemic | Healthcare Finance News

This article aims to understand the causes of burnout. And factors that can protect against it to improve healthcare workers quality of life and patient’s quality of care. The study measured organization capacity for change, individuals’ change readiness, hours worked per week, and burnout. It was found that organizational change capacity impacted burnout scores. As the change capacity of the organization increased. Burnout in healthcare workers decreased. These positive responses to change further decreased burnout. Strengths of this article are examining organizational factors in burnout. And how when they change so does employee satisfaction. Weakness of this article is not comparing inpatient vs outpatient organizations.

Describe The “Levels Of Evidence

 opic 4 DQ 2

The levels of evidence are an important part of all evidence-based practice. Understanding the levels. Wnd why they are necessary to the research is a great way for the reader to become involved. There are different levels of evidence that begin at a level one being the most factual. And level four being either old information that is not relevant anymore. Or it is not factual anymore through new evidence.

It is important that the researcher read all levels because it provides a huge story line of where and how we got to the practices we perform today. A type of practice that could change the results from each level would be a new set of information that debunked the old information. Such as the urinary catheter research. It has just come out in recent years that the urinary catheter needs to be removed immediately to decrease the chances of infection. EBP relies very heavily on levels of evidence to maintain the best practices in nursing (Burns 2018).

Using 200-300 words APA format with at least two references to support this discussion

Describe the “levels of evidence” and provide an example of the type of practice change that could result from each.

the integration of individual clinical expertise

the integration of individual clinical expertise

Evidence-based practice is the integration of individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research and patient’s values and expectations into the decision making process for patient care. It is a fundamental skill to be able to identify and appraise the best available evidence in order to integrate it with your own clinical experience and patients values.

Describe the four phases of critical appraisal and how to incorporate them into practice.

moral problems that recent healthcare technology creates

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapters 7, 8
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 2 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)
  • Narrated PowerPoint Tutorial (Make sure to review this tutorial before you begin recording.)

Instructions

For this week’s assignment respond to one of the following options, and include Option 1, 2, or 3 as part of your heading.

Option 1: The first option is to name and describe in detail a key specific and recent healthcare technology. What are at least two key moral problems this technology creates? What are the proper moral guidelines for dealing with it in your view? Compare your approach to what a utilitarian and ethical egoist would say (each independently). Consider whether differing ethical beliefs globally might or not agree with what you say.

Option 2: In the second option, name and describe in detail a key specific and recent social technology. What are at least two key moral problems this technology creates? What are the proper moral guidelines for dealing with it in your view? Compare your moral approach to what a utilitarian and social contract ethicist would say (each independently). Consider whether differing ethical beliefs globally might or not agree with what you say.

Option 3: John Doe, Patient One, is in late stage of kidney disease. If he does not receive a new kidney, then he is predicted to die within a week. Doe is 45, single, and has no children. Doctors theorize that Doe damaged his kidney by not following a low-salt diet. Doe inherited one million dollars and is known for giving money to charity. Without a transplant, he will probably be forced to spend all his money searching for a kidney outside of the usual legal channels. Patient Two is Jane Doe (no relation to John). Patient Two is a mother of two children (ages 21 and 24). She is divorced and 55 years old.

She developed kidney problems due to eating a high-fat and high-sugar diet. If she does not receive a kidney within one month, doctors believe she will die. Patient Three is an orphan. This orphan lives in a state facility. She was born with a genetic condition that constantly damages her kidney. The only known approach to her condition is to provide her with a kidney transplant every so often. She is 11 and has already undergone two kidney transplants. She will perish in two months if she does not receive another transplant.

All three patients are at the same hospital. The hospital only has one kidney to give out. The orphan’s birth parents were known to be of a religion that is opposed to organ donation. The other patients come from religions that do not oppose organ donation. Who should get the kidney? Why should that candidate receive it over the others? Devise a course of social action and a solution for this case by using the ethics of egoism and then utilitarianism to a key moral conflict involving health care in this case. Appraise the interests of diverse populations (in terms of ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) and how they relate to the case. Consider whether differing ethical beliefs globally might or not agree with what you say.

For all the options:

Cite the textbook and incorporate outside sources, including citations.

You should not be using any text you used in a discussion board or assignment for this class or any previous class.

Consider whether differing ethical beliefs globally might or not agree with what you say.

You will submit the following:

  • An audiovisual presentation that presents one of the options above. Be sure to give equal time to each element. Doing a PowerPoint presentation with audio recorded on the slides is preferred. Please refer to the Narrated PowerPoint Tutorial located in the Required Resources in this assignment.
  • Please provide a transcript of anything said in the recording aloud that does not appear as text on a slide. This transcript can be provided as a Word document or placed in the Notes section on the PowerPoint slides.
  • The link or a scan of the article mentioning any health technology, social technology, or case you are reporting on. If you made up the case, please indicate that in your report. If you choose to do option #3 (the case about a shortage of transplant kidneys), your article would likely be an article about the shortage of transplant organs, or a shortage of people signing up to be transplant donors, or the status of educating people about being donors, etc.

Presentation Requirements

  • Length: 4-6 minutes narrated presentation
  • Slide length: 4-6 slides (not including title slide, conclusion slide, or references slide)
  • Title slide
  • Conclusion slide
  • References slide (minimum of 2 scholarly sources cited in APA format; not narrated)
