Be able to synthesize the forces in the U.S. Healthcare system that shape healthcare policies.

Identify and briefly discuss one sociopolitical issue that is currently impacting health and / or health care in America. Identify at least two forces that you believe nurses and nurse practitioners can use to influence health policy for the identified issue and defend your use of those forces. Use evidence based information to support your responses.

Hint:

Attitudes of the society

Attitudes of the society

Most literature, including film and television scripts, attempts to affect the attitudes of the characters in the story as well as the attitudes of the audience. In this way, popular culture attempts to affect the attitudes of society as a whole, starting at an early age. Some attempts are successful, while others fail to change attitude, even if the story is enjoyable. Argument seeks to change attitude, and in some cases behavior. Potentially, popular culture conditions the audience to be more susceptible to attitude affect, meaning that if we, as arguers, can follow a script for changing attitudes, we can be better arguers.

For this activity, complete the following:

Pick a book or movie that tells an entire story. Do not use content that is made for television.

Using that story, write a short paper that addresses the following:

  1. Identify and discuss the predominant attitude of the protagonist concerning the storyline in the beginning of the story. For example, if I chose Cinderella (in any iteration), the attitude might be that life is hard and you have to make the best of it, even though it isn’t fair. Once you identify the attitude, discuss how that attitude was formed and what behaviors manifest as a result of the attitude.
  2. Describe which plot element pushes the protagonist out of their salient attitude, creating cognitive dissonance. Analyze any value conflict this creates. Explain how these value conflicts impact the behaviors of the protagonist.
  3. Evaluate the strategy the protagonist chooses to employ to shift their dissonance to salience. Be specific, using examples from the literature, to discuss how their behaviors are directed by these strategies.
  4. Identify and analyze how the plot and story attempt to affect the attitude of the audience (change, reinforcement, shaping). Explain how this happens.
  5. Evaluate whether the attitude affect is successful for both the protagonist and the audience.

WRITING REQUIREMENTS

  • This is a short paper, which means it should not exceed 2-4 pages (not including the title page and bibliography). Although there are specific requirements you need to address, you should edit your responses to be succinct and concise. Using more words doesn’t create better arguments.

  • double spaced
  • APA format
  • include both in-text citations and a reference page (bibliography)
  • Title page with your name, the course, the section number, and a title that includes Short Paper #1
  • Your paper should make an argument – don’t waffle or sit on the fence about anything. Take a stance and defend it.

Bail Reform

Bail Reform

In the Courts resource section, you identified the reason for having bail, the pros and cons of the current bail system, and its impact on diverse populations.

Representative Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts stated “One of my priorities is criminal justice reform, and there is certainly bipartisan support for that” (Oakes & Fleming, 2018).

Take a position:

What would a just (fair) pretrial bail system include (or exclude). Include three to five ideas, and a rationale to support your post.

Note

In your responses to peers, extend the ideas in their original posts to include nonmonetary release options by proposing alternatives, suggesting changes, or supporting the ideas presented.

Record Keeping

Record Keeping

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the article, 10 Tips to Manage Daycare Paperwork! (Links to an external site.), and Standard #6 in the NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards (Links to an external site.) document.

Your lead teacher is so impressed with how you are working with the students, she is now going to introduce you to a few of the administrative duties that are also a part of the teacher’s job.

While your lead teacher is an incredible educator, her record keeping skills are less than ideal. She has a table full of stacks of papers: portfolios, checklists, check-in and check-out daily records, anecdotal records, daily logs of each child’s behavior, and artwork. Although she has a good sense of where everything is, you remind her that she will be out for the next month and therefore it would be best if the stacks were better organized. During your discussion, your director comes in and tells you that you have four meetings to prepare for this week.

Meeting #1:

Licensing will be here to review our records to ensure that our check-in and check-out records are accurate.

Meeting #2:

Liam’s parents will be in to discuss his behavior. They have been noticing that he has become quite angry at home, and they are sure that something is happening at school to warrant this behavior.

Meeting #3:

Licensing will also be verifying any child injuries that have taken place in your learning environment. They have had a report from a parent stating that their child was hurt at school, and they were not notified.

Meeting #4:

The lead teacher that your students will transition to in the fall will be meeting with you to review your students. She wants to be prepared for these students. Please list the documents you need to gather in preparation for this meeting. Explain why you chose the documents you did.

Review the following list to determine which documents need to be pulled for each meeting and then write your discussion response.

Portfolios
Check-In Check-Out Records
Checklists
Daily Records
Anecdotal Notes
Daily Behavior Logs
Parent Monthly Satisfaction Surveys
Incident Report (Injury)
Doctor’s Notes
Insurance Records
Financial Records
Employment Applications
Learning Center License
Current Rosters
Daily Activity Schedule

In your discussion,

  • Explain your rationale behind your selections and discuss any documents that weren’t as easy to file.
  • Share two methods of record keeping that you would utilize in your own classroom. There is no need to re-invent the wheel – resources like Pinterest and Google are a great place for inspiration. Discuss the two methods, how these will help keep your documents organized, and why you selected them.
  • Feel free to include a link to the resources that explain the method in more detail.

Professional Development

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Early Childhood Education Professional Development: Training and Technical Glossary (Links to an external site.) to understand the importance of Professional Development within this profession.

Your lead teacher is overseeing professional development this year and has asked you to take over this task. She has started by gathering a few options that would be beneficial for the team. Review the options she has chosen and choose one you think will be of interest to your team.

Available Options:

Note

You truly need to reflect on your choice before sharing this with your new colleagues. Review your options and respond to the following questions by completing a short PowerPoint (three slides) “selling” your choice.

In your PowerPoint (Links to an external site.), address the following questions:

  • Why do you think this option is best for your team?
  • What do you hope they will learn from this professional development?

In your discussion, answer the following questions:

  • How much does this professional development opportunity cost?
  • If someone asked you why you chose this option, what would you tell them?
  • If someone complains about your choice, how will you respond?

crime scene investigation

crime scene investigation

You are an intern working with a state crime scene investigation team that has statewide jurisdiction and gets called in by county and municipal authorities for crime scene analysis and laboratory support. A number of larger cities in the state have their own crime scene units. Because crime scene investigators (CSIs) get called into court to testify as expert witnesses, your unit has a lot of opportunities to testify in court. The state you live and work in has assumed the Federal Rules of Evidence Rule 702 as their own for expert witness testimony. They also have the Frye Standard (common in many states).

Note

You will be presenting a paper to the State Division of the International Association for Identification Conference in the Capital next week. You will be presenting a paper on the topic of the admissibility of expert witness testimony in court.

Address the following in 3-4 pages:

  • How would you define what makes someone an expert witness?
  • Who can be an expert witness? Explain.
  • What restrictions are placed on expert witnesses?
  • How are lay witnesses and expert witnesses different? Explain in detail.
  • Explain the Daubert Rule in contrast to the Frye Standard, and disclose which one of the two would allow for the identification of more expert witnesses if they were used exclusively.
