When writing papers– whether the mandatory essays which make up for 25% of the grades for the grades for the first three tests, or optional papers to boost grades–all sources used in writing them must be identified, a hard copy of the principle page of the source(s) drawn on should accompany the paper, and verbatim statements longer than four succession of words must be put in quotation marks. If plagiarism occurs, the plagiarizing student will receive an F on the test s/he submitted the paper(s) for.
1.Using only your textbook and class notes, describe the Vedas. How far back were they composed? What do they tell us about the religion, society, and the mode of life of the branch of the Indo-Europeans who conquered their way into India? What is the name of this particular branch? What did they bring with them to India? What is the significance of Karma, dharma, and Samsara in their belief system?
2.What were the principal developments in China during the Zhou period? To answer this question, you need to cover the major developments in China’s political structure, emergence of a new political philosophy regarding the basis of royal legitimacy, the changes in China’s economy and their causes, and social changes connected with the Period of the Warring States.
3.In what ways was the Persian Empire different from the empires preceding it? What was the key to the success of the Persians in establishing and maintaining their empire?
4.Athenians are credited with the formulation of a democratic constitution. How democratic was the Athenian city-state? How similar or different was the Athenian democracy to the one you are familiar with?
5.What were the immediate, and distant, causes of the Peloponnesian War; how was it connected to the Ionian Revolt; who were the immediate, and ultimate, beneficiaries of this war?
