Modern spectacle event

Modern spectacle event

The reading this week discusses spectacle events held by the nobility in Western Europe, particularly France and Spain. The concept of the spectacle event never left, and we are surrounded by many examples of such events in modern times. For this discussion, please share an event that fits into the definition of a spectacle. Make sure you describe your example event in detail, and point out how this event fits into the spectacle category.

You will need to post one time with your example of a modern spectacle event and post again in response to someone else. Please remember you are graded on both posts. Your response posts need to be engaging and go beyond just a few sentences stating things like “great point”, or “I agree with you”. This is a discussion forum, so think about it just like that, as a discussion. Simply agreeing with someone or liking their post does not set the stage for a discussion.

Note

Overall this should be a fun topic, as there are many spectacle events happening around us. I am interested to see what examples you come up with.

Political rights

Write a letter to someone who is important to you, such as a close friend or family member, about one of the issues we studied in our most recent modules: immigration policy, police reform, or reproductive rights and how those issues may impact their civil rights or civil liberties.

1) Explain in your letter what you’ve learned about these policies

2) Explain why the issues you’ve learned about are important for them to understand (how they may impact your life or theirs) and

3) Explain how you think these policies could be improved to protect or strengthen our rights.

Questions to consider when writing either letter:

  • Are law enforcement policies and practices such as stop and frisk or recent immigration policies/practices or recent policies about reproductive rights consistent with our Constitutional rights? Have the courts protected those rights? Explain why or why not.  (Consider the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments, federal immigration laws such as asylum, DACA, and/or Supreme Court cases in your response).
