Concepts Of Epidemiology

Consider the following hypothetical scenario: The Idaho Kidney Center analyzed deaths among patients with
kidney disease who were seen at their program from 1/1/2006 through 12/31/2011. A total of 2,965 deaths
occurred during the observation period among the 22,735 study population. The table below gives the race and
gender of the decedents and the total population.
Characteristic Decedents (N = 2,965) Total Study Population (N = 22,735)
Gender

Female

Using the scenario above, calculate and explain how to find the prevalence of Hispanics in the total study
population. Then, calculate and explain how to find the ratio of males to females in the total study population.
What is the proportion of Black, non-Hispanic decedents in this program? In addition, what is the proportion of
White, non-Hispanic decedents in this study? Explain why this information is necessary for an epidemiological
study

A patient is ready for discharge when she spikes a fever of 101.3°F. A call to the physician results in an order for IV antibiotics to be administered every 12 hours for 48 hours. The patient’s family arrives to take her home, and they discover that she now has an IV and will not be discharged for 2 days. They ask, “What happened? Did our mother catch something in the hospital? We thought this is a place of healing.” How will you respond? Your response may have legal implications.

we explored Novelty, Cognitive Bias, and Situational Awareness and how each of these applies to Hospital Emergency Management. This case study focuses on the pre-hospital response and paints a picture of the chaos that ensued prior to victims arriving at hospitals

Answer the questions posted based on how you would have prepared to receive victims as a hospital manager.
Drawing on and referring to your knowledge from the course (including analytic readings, videos, class sessions and case studies), Using 1000-1200 words that respond to the following questions.
 Describe the Novelty of this event, and how it quickly contributed to overwhelming resources.
Was the response hampered by cognitive bias? Where responders able to communicate real- time situational awareness to local hospitals? (hint, Observation 15)
 Did interagency collaboration and training (EMS/Fire/PD/Hospitals) prior to the event really help in such a response.

  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Introduction
Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak” as in cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of a lower socio-economic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

  • Initial Post Instructions
Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created it and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.
  • Take your personal ethical philosophy statement and use it to work through John Doe’s case. What is moral and immoral per your theory?
  • How would the veil of ignorance or a different theory of justice address John Doe’s case?

Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. When possible, respond to a peer who chose a different ethical theory than you did in your posting. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.

Writing Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside scholarly source)

  • Find 5 different online mortgage lenders, such as this one.
  • From these 5 lenders, find the following rates, assuming the mortgage payments are made monthly:
    • 10-year (if available) for fixed-rate mortgage
    • 15-year (if available) for fixed-rate mortgage
    • 30-year for fixed-rate mortgage
  • Convert these rates into effective annual rates (EARs).
  • Discuss which rate is actually the cheapest rate.
    • What are 2 things about the sample Web site given above that could be applicable to a consumer or investor?
    • Present the rates in a table. List the quoted rate and EAR rate, the lender, and the maturity of the loan. Show your work for each calculation.
    • What is 1 mistake people make when calculating their mortgage payments? Explain your answer.
    • Based solely on the EAR, which rate is the cheapest? Does this make sense?
    • Why do the different lenders have different rates?
    • Is the difference in rates going to make a huge impact on the cost to the homebuyer? Explain your answer.
