Synthesis Assignment

You have read Kevin Chung’s essay “Fried Rice: My Taste of Culture, Home and Family,” and you have read Amy S. Choi’s article “What Americans can Learn from Other Food Cultures.” This week, you have also read Suenary Philavanh’s article “Food Strengthens Cultural Identity for International Student.” Find the points that are similar between these three texts and find the points that are different. Write a synthesis pointing out the similarities and differences between these three texts.

• Your synthesis should be 1 page in length (300 words)
• Do not include quotes in your synthesis, but DO paraphrase, and use in-text citations when referring to the ideas of the authors
• Format your paper according to MLA
• Post your synthesis on Canvas by 10:00am on Friday 4/24
• Submit your synthesis matrix as well (See the Synthesis Tutorial video in the link below)

Directions:

For your Final Project, you will write a theory paper that articulates your theoretical orientation toward working with couples and families.

Your paper must include the following elements that evolve from your personal theoretical orientation:

• The basic view of human nature as seen through your theoretical lens
• Key factors that account for changes in behavior
• An explanation of how intervention strategies are designed within this theoretical orientation
• An explanation of how your theory conceptualizes mental health
• Key factors that contribute to healthy family/couple relationships
• A description of the skills necessary within this theoretical orientation to meet the agreed upon goals and outcomes for couples and families
• The nature of the practitioner-client relationship and its relative importance
• An explanation of the evidence to support your theoretical orientation as an appropriate intervention for couples and families in need.

Information on scholarly writing may be found in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association(6th ed.), and at the Walden Writing Center website.

Be sure to support your assignment with specific references to the resources. at lease four to five are social work peer reviewed articles and journals to support information present in the assignment.

You will need to find an academic, sociological, peer-reviewed journal, research article on “Academic Premier” or another library academic search engine and down load the article and read it. Some journal titles can be found here at this link (Links to an external site.). It can be over any Sociological research topic in an academic sociological journal that you might find interesting. It also must not be more than 10 years old. I will only accept articles published from 2010 to Present. If someone finds an older article that they really want to read, please contact me to receive permission. Here are some examples of potential topics: Divorce and social stigma among young women, elder abuse, gender identity, education leaving the poor behind, sports that reflect wealth, climate change and human denial, women underrepresented in computer science, social media and society, sexism in workplace, unequal education, sociology of sports topics, and so much more.

After writing a summary, you must write a reflection and recommendation about your article. For example, why is this topic interesting to you? and/or how did the findings shape how you think about the issue? Also, would you recommend this reading, why or why not ? Explain. The reflection should be at least a half a page, typed and double-spaced (single OK too).

Your post should be 800 words, but it can go over.

Tourism turns local people and places into consumer goods, changing the balance of global and local. For local people and places, tourism often brings global goods but comes at the expense of local goods. The objective of this week’s assignment is to understand the ways tourism transforms local people and places.

(1) Choose one of the places Pico Iyer visits in Video Night in Kathmandu.

Describe two ways international travel and tourism have transformed that place – a physical transformation and a human (social or cultural) transformation.

(2) Now “visit” the same place, either using Google Maps Street View, a travel video from YouTube, or a combination of the two. (Feel free to enhance your visit with a Google Image search, etc.) What evidence do you see today of the same two transformations?

(3) Finally reflect on your observations. Are these transformations you and Pico Iyer witnessed good or bad for the local place and people? Articulate one way they are good and one way they are bad.
