Identifying Variables

Identifying Variables

  1. Describe the difference between an independent and dependent variable.
  2. Locate a QUANTITATIVE peer-reviewed journal article in your field and answer the following questions.
  • What are the research questions?
  • What are the independent variables?
  • What are the dependent variables?
  • How did the authors measure the dependent variables?
  1. Identify possible variables for your own dissertation study or for a proposed study (if you plan to do the Strategic Research Project).
    1. For quantitative studies,
      1. What are the independent variables?
      2. What are the dependent variables?
      3. What are some ways you could measure the dependent variables?
    2. For qualitative studies,
      1. What is the variable of interest/phenomenon?
      2. What are some ways you plan to collect data to measure the variable of interest/phenomenon?

Project

Project

Initial Postings: Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook must be the primary source utilized and listed in your reference section (and properly cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion. This means that they support the material from the textbook. Do not use other sources to substitute for or replace the textbook.

Provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:

Define and provide one example each of a known known, known unknown, and unknown unknown you have encountered on previous projects. Which of the these would be addressed during planning phase? Which would be the basis for listing on a risk register? Why?
To help identify risks, what are some questions a project manager could ask when reviewing the project charter and WBS? Why would these be the questions to ask?
Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. Postings must be in the student’s own words – do not provide quotes!

Note

Your initial post should be at least 500+ words and in APA format (written in full , using proper paragraph structure, sources cited within the body of the main text and Times New Roman with font size 12).

Response to Other Student Postings: Respond substantively (at least 100 words) to the post of at least two peers, . A peer response such as “I agree with her,” or “I liked what he said about that” or similar comments are not considered substantive and will not be counted for course credit. Also, just repeating information from the course material or your own initial post does not satisfy these criteria.

EST by highlighting differences between your postings and your colleagues’ postings. Provide additional insights or alternative perspectives. This means an on-going conversation in addition to the two required responses above.

Evaluation of posts and responses: Your initial posts and peer responses will be evaluated on the basis of the kind of critical thinking and engagement displayed. The grading rubric evaluates the content based on four areas: Content Knowledge & Structure, Critical Thinking, Presentation & Writing Mechanics, and Response to Other Students

Discussion 11 (Analyzing)

This week we turn our attention to annotations. Annotation is a crucial component of good data visualization. It can turn a boring graphic into an interesting and insightful way to convey information. This week, please navigate to any site and find a graphic that could use some annotation work. Add the graphic and the website it is found as an attachment to this post and note what you would do to enhance the graphic and note why you would make these decisions.

Note

In response to peers, add additional information to their posts noting what else could be done to enhance the graphic.

This should be a minimum of 300 words, checked with Grammarly, with at least one APA formatted reference.

obesity

Child obesity

Child obesity is a medical condition that affects both teenagers and children, resulting in having too much fat stored within the body and negatively affecting the child.  There are many factors that contribute to childhood obesity in America.  One of the key things is that only 2% of children in America get healthy foods. That means that 2% or less consume a well-balanced diet while 98% or more children do not receive proper nutrition. Obesity in children contributes to reduced life expectancy, and there is a need to develop better eating habits among the children to rescue cases of the chronic trend. To address this problem, I went to the CINAHL database under the nursing database options. I then conducted a search for “childhood obesity” and “prevention” to obtain evidence-based results for this topic. There were thousands of articles to choose from so I randomly browsed the options until I found one that would pique my interest. The most consistently mentioned intervention for the prevention of childhood obesity was nutrition and exercise. More specifically, the nutritional patterns of the parents were more likely to indicate the risk of childhood obesity. For this problem, my intervention will be a nutritional training program that is family based coupled with structured family exercise. Eating behaviors include poor diets where the child might be eating foods rich in fats and sugar such as fast foods, particularly sna (Suarez, 2020). Calories should be limited for sugary foods and those rich in fats (Filgueiras et al., 2019).

NOTE: An abstract is not required

NOTE: This is a template and guide. Delete all highlighted materials.

Note that in APA there is no heading that says Introduction. The paragraph or two that follows the title on the first page of your text is assumed to be your introduction. Your introduction follows the title of your paper (note that it is not bolded). You should start your introduction with a powerful statement or two to stimulate interest. You should identify the purpose of your paper and provide a preview of what the paper will include. Remember that formal papers are in general in third person so no I, me, we; however, you can use first person in the search section since you are describing what you did.

Significance of the Practice Problem

Start this section with identification of the practice problem. This section should also answer the question “why is this important?” You should address the significance to the patient/client (e.g., pain, suffering, quality of life, impact on income potential, etc.), the family, healthcare system (e.g., impact on cost or delivery systems), and society (e.g., cost of care, need for healthcare policy). Discuss the incidence and/or prevalence and include the financial impact if at all possible. You might discuss the impact on length of stay, readmission, home health care requirements, disability and/or mortality. Also, you should address any quality, safety, legal, and ethical implications. This discussion MUST be substantiated by citations from professional literature.

PICOT Question

This section should include your PICOT question but also should provide thorough descriptions of your population, intervention, comparison intervention, outcome, and timing. This section contains, in essence, your operational definitions of the variables in the question. If you use definitions from the literature be sure to cite them.

Population/Problem

Describe the population by age, gender, diagnosis, personal habit, procedure, etc. Be thorough. Describe the population by age, gender, diagnosis, personal habit, procedure, etc. Be thorough. Remember that this is the population that most closely matches the population where you would conduct your EBP change but not so specifically like that population that you cannot find that population in the scientific literature related to your problem and intervention.

Intervention

Describe the intervention being investigated as a possible means to achieve the outcome. Be thorough and include citations which support this intervention for your selected practice problem.

Comparison

Describe the comparison. If the comparison is usual treatment, describe what that usual treatment is and include citations to support that it is usual treatment.

Outcome

Describe the outcome. It should be measurable since you will need to describe how you are going to measure it in your evaluation plan. If you know of a tool to measure the outcome, briefly describe it here. Again, citations are necessary.

Timing

Timing may be related to an event (e.g., 6 months after injury) or is how long after initiation of your intervention would you expect to see a change in the outcome. Use citations to support the appropriateness of the timing.

Search Strategy and Results

This section should include a description of keywords, inclusion and exclusion criteria, which databases were searched and the results of the search. You also need to identify Figure 1, which is a diagram showing the results of your search. Your final number of primary research studies and/or systematic reviews after exclusion criteria is applied should be between five and ten. If you have more than that, then you need to narrow your search, perhaps by publication date range. You need to identify why you eliminate any primary research studies or systematic reviews that meet your inclusion criteria and do not meet your exclusion criteria. One acceptable reason would be poor quality of study. (NOTE: If you did not find at least 8-10 primary quantitative research studies and/or systematic reviews to answer your practice question, it is a research question rather than an EBP question and you need to change your question.)

Conclusion

The conclusion should start with a statement regarding the intention of the paper and your achievement toward that intention. Also, it should briefly say what was included in the paper. Remember that the introduction is a preview and this section should contain a summary.

References

Remember that this is a reference list rather than a bibliography. A bibliography is everything you read to prepare the paper but a reference list is only what you cited. If there is not a citation for a reference, it should not be here. PLEASE make sure that your references and your citations throughout the paper are in APA 7th format. You can go from an A paper to a B paper on APA errors alone. Take the time to make sure that they are correct. We have already formatted the paper for you with this template.

Post your answers to the 6 questions corresponding to this week’s content on primary care medication management. Provide your responses and rationales. Support your rationales with high-level evidence. (See Post Expectations)

Mrs. Lyons is a 57-year-old African American female who recently developed headaches and had an elevated blood pressure reading at her work health fair. When she had her blood pressure taken at the health fair the reading was 168/99. She has gone back to the drug store 3 other times to take her blood pressure. The readings have been: 145/90, 150/89, 140/88. At the health fair she was told her BMI is elevated. Her cholesterol levels were also done at the health fair. The results were: total cholesterol level of 250, LDL 138, HDL 48, and Triglycerides 170.

She has not been to see a primary care provider in over 5 years. At her last office visit, which was 5 years ago, her blood pressure was (135/95). Her LDL and triglycerides were also elevated at that time. The patient was supposed to monitor her blood pressure at home and trial diet and lifestyle changes. She was supposed to return for a follow-up with her blood pressure log and for a recheck of her labs. She, unfortunately, did not do this.

Today in the clinic her vital signs are:
BP 146/92, HR 90, Temp 98.4, RR 12, O2 98%, Height 5’5, Weight 220 lbs, BMI 36.6

She is not currently taking any medications. She has NKDA. Family history: her brother and sister both have been diagnosed with hypertension and DM. Diagnoses for the patient are HTN, Obesity, and Hyperlipidemia.
