What is a science memo?
A science memo is a brief description of an emerging social or environmental problem that requires highly technical knowledge and expertise to understand its causes and consequences. A science memo is written by an expert, or group of experts, to help administrative or legislative decision-makers develop, adopt, or implement a course of action to address the problem. Science memos are written by experts within an agency, academia, or organizations who wish to influence policy, planning, and management actions.
The memo will clearly state the problem and synthesize the current state of knowledge and understanding within 2-3 pages. This requires the authors to write clearly and concisely. The authors must identify what information in pertinent to make a decision on choosing a course of action and gain attention of decision-makers.
Assignment Description
Students will identify an environmental problem and describe the current state of knowledge and understanding pertaining to the problem. The student will clearly and concisely describe the problem and present evidence to support the existence of the problem and its probable consequences using peer-reviewed literature and government data. Government data can come from agency websites, reports, or databases. No data or evidence can come from popular media or advocacy organizations (e.g. The Sierra Club).
Students will also identify an administrative or legislative decision-maker who could use the information to develop a course of action that will reduce social or environmental risks associated with the problem. Students are highly advised to tailor information to help make a decision on a course of action.
