Interprofessional Collaboration and Communication
Interprofessional Collaboration and Communication
Advanced practice nurses often encounter diverse barriers while collaborating with other healthcare professionals. These barriers include the absence of mechanisms that spur timely information exchange and professional cultures. Professional culture entails medicine’s historical hierarchy that may impede authoritative decision making, conflict resolution, and heightens competition among team members. According to Dahl & Crawford (2018), acquainting oneself with other medical professions’ roles is crucial during collaboration. It aids in comprehending each team member’s abilities to eliminate overlapping roles. It is also prudent to incorporate the patients and their family members into the healthcare plan to improve health outcomes. In the video, nurses can demonstrate excellent communication skills by communicating virtually or face to face with the patients to understand their goals and progress. Through this, they can screen for adverse childhood experiences and intervene early (The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, 2020). Conversely, non-effective communication skills that hinder communication include merely relying on a standard medical record to understand the patients’ progress.
