The discussion is about health systems strengthening in countries or regions that are described as ‘post conflict’. Health systems often collapse, or are hugely compromised, in the midst of conflict. As an example consider the situation in Syria. Syria had an excellent health system prior to the ongoing civil war but most health workers have either been killed, displaced, or migrated. Health facilities have been the target of directed bombing attacks. In spite of unimaginable conditions for much of the population and for many health workers, medical services continue to be provided by courageous individuals and groups.
Please post your questions and contributions from what you have read and/or what you have experienced.
- Can you think of examples of countries that have made the transition from conflict to post conflict and have rebuilt their health system. Countries of the former Yugoslavia, e.g. Bosnia and Herzgovina, are one example. What are the characteristics of countries that have made successful transition to a well functioning health system post-conflict?
- What is the role of organizations like MSF that often provide services in the midst of conflict for the rebuilding of the health system post-conflict?
