The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Unethical Practices in The Healthcare Essay

You will be writing a critical thinking essay for your term paper this semester. You will need to choose a topic related to the biological sciences – we have discussed a number of examples in lecture this semester – and relate that topic to your reading of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot. Here are a couple of examples, for clarification: ‐ You might take the stance that the events in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks were ethically wrong, as they inappropriately benefitted the wealthy, and compare that to the CRISPR/Cas9 gene modification technology and the potential to also inappropriately benefit the wealthy. ‐ You might take the stance that current genetic heritage reporting companies (such as 23andMe, or Ancestry.com) are subject to privacy concerns, and compare that to any privacy concerns you find in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. ‐ You might take the stance that the disproportionate representation of white/Caucasian individuals in the biomedicalsciences(either at the level of the scientist, or in the databases used to guide treatment options) will lead to disenfranchisement of people of color, causing them to mistrust the medical institution as a whole, and relate that to similar issues raised in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This is not an exhaustive list of possible topics for your term paper. The specific guidelines for your paper are: ‐ The term paper should be no more than thee to five pages in length. Anything longer than five pages will have points deducted. ‐ You will need to include The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as a reference. You will also need at least two other references – one reference that supports your stance, and a second reference that supports a view opposed to your stance. ‐ Your citation format should be legible (that means, I need to be able to determine which reference you are using and find that reference for myself) and consistent. You are free to choose the specific reference format with which you are most comfortable.
