IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:
Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.
Briefly describe the factors that led to this refugee crisis and the public health challenges that have resulted.
Genocide is the factor that led to this refugee crisis. A genocide is the elimination (killing) of a particular group of people with the goal of complete annihilation of the group. The group that is facing this genocide are called the Rohingya and according to the article they are deemed the most discriminated group in the world and considered a Myanmar ethnic minority group. The main reason why this group is refused citizenship and having a refugee crisis is that they are mainly Muslim and they have their own culture and language whereas Myanmar’s government are predominantly Buddhist. Religion is a big factor apart from being a minority and facing genocide. The public health challenge that arrived is that because these people are not being protected by the law, they are attacked, killed, raped, tortured, and are experiencing other horrific public health cisis (British Broadcasting Corporation, 2020).
What is the role of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other key global health organizations in this crisis?
Based on the article, the roles of the World Health Organizations and other key global organizations such as the Independent Commission of Enquiry (ICOE) is that they are assessing the situation are ordering the government of Myanmar to stop killing its people and provide protection. However, the government is stating they had nothing to do with the genocide, and this denial along with them not being part of the IOCE is an issue. However, because of the seriousness of the public health issues (the genocide), an investigation will be carried out by these global public health organizations to serve justice and charge those responsible for their war crimes (British Broadcasting Corporation, 2020).
What do you think the role of the United States should be in response to this crisis?
I feel like there is nothing the United State can do to help the situation that other organizations are not already doing. Maybe they can provide resources (food) to the refugees and military protection. However, sending in our troops will only backfire because our own people will be harmed. Furthermore, I think Bangladesh refusing refugees because of population issues is an eye-opener that there needs to be something put in place for those fleeing their countries because of war or health reasons. However, fleeing to nearby countries will not work because those countries already have population issues and cannot afford to increases that problem without aid from other global public health organizations. Maybe an island or nation needs to be created to accept refugees (British Broadcasting Corporation, 2020).
While humanitarian aid was offered, policy action by global health organizations was slow. Describe challenges, such as government structure, to addressing refugee crises from a policy and law perspective.
From a policy and law perspective, implementing a law on a global scale with members from different countries that are not related to the country that is having the issue is challenging. It will be hard to investigate the situation when the country’s government itself is causing the harm. Furthermore, these government officials will be doing everything to create a challenge or try to hide evidence, which was noted by the article which states that the government denied harming the people when there are clear evidences that it is the government’s militants that are killing, harming, and destroying the Rohingya’s villages and houses (British Broadcasting Corporation, 2020).
