Thrasymachus Concept of Justice
Write a thread in response to the following prompt:
Thrasymachus argues in our reading from Book I of Plato’s Republic that justice is the advantage of the stronger. The account as it is articulated in this dialogue is ambiguous insofar as it appears both to be hinging on a descriptive claim (what is called “justice” is actually just what is in the interests of the ruling class) and a corresponding normative claim (might makes right). Is Thrasymachus’ cynical account of justice compelling? Does Plato (through his mouthpiece, Socrates) provide a satisfactory refutation of this view? Why or why not.
