EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper, based on your reading for the week, examining the importance of emotional intelligence in all aspects of life. Be sure to address the following items in your analysis:

o Describe the differences between traditional cognitive intelligence and emotional intelligence.

o Analyze the use of emotional intelligence concepts in work life, home life, and personal life.

MENTALLY ILL OFFENDERS: TREATMENT APPROACHES AND CHALLENGES

The treatment of forensic populations, as with any clinical population, must be tailored to the individuals as well as to their mental illness. There are specific treatment protocols for particular mental illnesses. These treatment protocols need to be paired with individuals based on the unique traits of the individuals and augmented with particular treatment approaches. Forensic treatment practitioners are required to treat a wide variety of mental illnesses ranging from serious personality disorders and psychotic conditions to suicidal and parasuicidal behaviors. In order to treat mentally ill offenders effectively, the forensic treatment practitioner needs to have a thorough understanding of basic mental health disorders and treatments as well as a solid working knowledge of the forensic setting and system.

Additionally, treatment professionals must be well versed in the process of psychotherapy and other treatment approaches for the mentally ill. Many traditional counseling and therapy theories and approaches used with clinical clients are also appropriate for mentally ill offenders (e.g., empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness). However, forensic settings are not conventional treatment settings and may require special considerations. Hence, there are many challenges forensic treatment practitioners face in the treatment of mentally ill offenders.

To prepare for this Assignment:

· Reflect on the type of clients with whom you might work with in the criminal justice system. Consider how their experience with mental illness may influence their experience with the criminal justice system.

· Conduct research in the Walden library on treatment approaches to mental illness in the types of clients with whom you might work.

· Select two challenges related to the treatment of mentally ill offenders in a forensic setting. Think about the steps you would take to overcome these challenges. Finally, consider what treatment approach(es) best addresses these challenges.

The Assignment (3–4 pages):

· Briefly, describe how mental illness may affect the types of clients with whom you might work. Identify the area of criminal justice and type of setting (e.g., prison, jail, community probation, etc.) where might work, including the type of services you might provide in that setting.

· Explain a treatment approach you believe would effectively address the mental health concerns with this client population and why you chose this approach. Be specific. Provide evidence to research to support your recommended approach.

· Explain at least two challenges related to the treatment of mentally ill offenders in a forensic setting.

· Then, explain the steps you would take to overcome these challenges.

· Explain any ethical or legal considerations you would need to consider when providing mental health treatment in a criminal justice setting.

· Explain any cultural or diversity related considerations you may to consider with providing mental health treatment in a criminal justice setting.

SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM

In every forensic treatment setting, the forensic psychology professional must be aware of the role that suicide prevention plays in the larger system inside and outside forensic institutions. Both incarcerated offenders and individuals awaiting sentencing pose potential suicide risks. In addition, offenders on probation or parole may exhibit an increased risk of self-harm. Often, suicide risk is increased in the forensic setting because of factors ranging from shame and guilt to mental illness or fear. Suicide prevention is one of the most critical functions that a forensic treatment practitioner has in any forensic treatment setting.

Even though staff members in jails and prisons work hard at reducing suicides, people still choose to end their lives when they are in forensic treatment settings. Although some of these individuals suffer from pre-existing mental health conditions, many do not. Forensic treatment practitioners should be leaders and advocates for suicide prevention efforts in their forensic settings. In addition to basic policy knowledge, the savvy forensic psychology professional needs to be aware of local, state, and national efforts to reduce the instances of attempted and completed suicides in forensic treatment settings.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Think about the components of suicide prevention and intervention approaches and programs. Consider the efficacy of these approaches and programs. Reflect on which of these components are important in forensic treatment settings.

· Select two components of suicide prevention and intervention approaches and programs that you think are important in forensic treatment settings, and consider why.

With these thoughts in mind:

SCHIZOPHRENIA OVER TIME: EXPERIENCES LIVING WITH THE ILLNESS

Experiences of schizophrenia are not homogeneous; there is wide variety in onset, course of illness, and combinations of symptoms. Social workers need to be able to understand the different manifestations and pathways of the illness to plan interventions. Social work services play a key role in stabilizing crises, supporting family coping, and influencing overall quality of life and outcomes of individuals with schizophrenia. In this Assignment, you practice applying this necessary individualization.

To prepare: In the Learning Resources, focus on the associated features, development, and course of the illnesses in the schizophrenia spectrum. Also focus on descriptions of the disorder and the way it develops for different individuals.

Choose two articles from the list in the Learning Resources that apply to treatment support and interventions for the schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders chapter in the DSM 5. Choose either Saks or McGough to focus on for this assignment.

Submit a 3- to 4-page paper, supported by at least 4 scholarly resources (See below) (not including DSM-5), in which you address the following:

  • Describe Saks’s or McGough’s experiences with schizophrenia. Identify onset, associated features (specifically referencing the positive and negative symptoms), development, and course.
  • Explain how you would use the Clinician Rated Dimensions of Psychosis Symptom Severity measure and the WHODAS to help confirm your diagnosis.
  • Explain how you would plan treatment and individualize it for Saks or McGough. Support your response with references to scholarly resources. In your explanation, consider the following questions:
    • What are the long-term challenges for someone living with the illness?
    • What social, family, vocational, and medical supports are needed for long-term stabilization?
  • Briefly explain how race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, or other identity characteristics may influence an individual’s experience with schizophrenia.

PERSONALITY DISORDERS

Personality disorders can arise through trauma, and they often carry added stigma. In this Discussion, you analyze a case study focused on a personality disorder while also reflecting on how power, privilege, and stigma affect such diagnoses.

To prepare: Review the case provided by your instructor for this week’s Discussion and consider your differential diagnostic process for them. Be sure to consider any past diagnoses and what influence those might have on their current diagnosis and needs. Finally, return to the Week 1 resources on stigma and reflect on stigma related to personality disorders.

Post a 300- to 500-word response in which you address the following:

  1. Provide the full DSM-5 diagnosis. Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may need clinical attention). Keep in mind a diagnosis covers the most recent 12 months.
  2. Explain the diagnosis by matching the symptoms identified in the case to the specific criteria for the diagnosis.
  3. Support your decision by identifying the symptoms which meet specific criteria for each diagnosis.
  4. Identify any close differentials and why they were eliminated. Concisely support your decisions with the case materials and readings.
  5. Explain how diagnosing a client with a personality disorder may affect their treatment.
  6. Analyze how power and privilege may influence who is labeled with a personality disorder and which types of personality disorders.
  7. Identify how trauma affects the case, either precipitating the diagnosis and/or resulting from related symptoms or treatment of diagnosis.

THE EFFECTS OF THE ONLY CHILD SYNDROME IN THE WORKPLACE

2. Select a minimum of four relevant articles from peer reviewed journals, read them carefully, and completely, taking notes along the way. Use the databases in the library’s webpage to search for peer reviewed journal articles. Of course, more than three articles (At least 1 source from Alfred Adler)

3. Begin your paper with an general introduction to the topic.

4. Summarize the purpose of each study, and the methods and results of each article. Compare and contrast, combining them into a cohesive review. Note: some articles may be review articles or theoretical and may not include any data analysis (methods and results). These are still okay, just structure your paper to summarize the major points made in the article or articles.

5. End with a conclusion paragraph about the usefulness of research like this, along with possible applications to the “real world” and recommendations for future research.

BARRIERS TO SEEKING SERVICES

Imagine the following realistic response by a military family member frustrated by her inability to obtain the medical services her child needs:

“What do you mean you do not accept Tricare? My husband is deployed. The base clinic is closed and I have to get medicine for my child. She has an infection and high fever. These are military people standing on the front line for you and you won’t accept my insurance?”

Reflect back to earlier in the course when you read about the demographics of military personnel. Many military personnel are young, often with young families. With the exception of high-ranking officials, enlisted personnel do not typically expect to make high salaries in their military careers. There are perks, such as health care benefits, tuition assistance, and services, but there may be gaps in services. There may be occasions in which a family needs more than what they can obtain on a military installation.

Within the military culture, many military personnel and their families experience barriers when seeking additional services. Draw upon the knowledge that you have gained throughout this course. Consider what you know about the culture, attitudes, benefits, and provisions provided for military personnel and their families. Consider what barriers might exist for military personnel and their families to seek additional services outside the military installation.
