The article ‘Duck Dynasty’ and Quackery by Charles M. Blow, was published in the New York Times on December 20, 2013.

  • Read it and answer the following nine questions.
  • Express your points clearly and in the same order as the questions so that I do not have to search through paragraphs for you answers.
  • You must submit your assignment as a Microsoft Word.doc or .docx file.

1. What are two conclusions you take away from the article? Enumerate them (e.g. First and Second). Do not summarize the article – these are your “take-aways.”

2. Does the author believe that Robertson’s position (that he had not personally witnessed mistreatment of black workers and that they were happy) contributes to human suffering? Give one or two specific citations from the article to support your answer.

3. Consider how the denial of racism and the role of institutional racism (e.g., in the justice system, public education, and the economy) contributes to human suffering today.

Race Ethnicity & Everyday Life in A Muslim Woman Perspective

RESPONSE PAPERS SHOULD BE IN LENGTH (ABOUT A 1000 WORDS), TYPED (DOUBLE SPACED), AND SHOULD EXPLICITLY ADDRESS THE GIVEN THEME.

UTILIZING THE READINGS.

REFLECT ON THE READINGS

PLEASE MAKE IT LOOK SIMPLE AND DO NOT USE COMPLICATED WORDS OR SENTENCES. ( BE STRAIGHTFORWARD)

Them:

Thinking about the everyday impact of race/ethnicity. Let’s begin with the profound statement made by writer Zora Neale Hurston as she said “I am not tragically Black!’ Think about the ways the ideas of race and ethnicity have constructed you and how the world sees you (please write this as Muslim female who currently living in the us , like how the ways and the ideas of race and ethnicity have constructed me as Muslim person specifically female and how the world sees me a s Muslim female in general ( when I say in general , I mean do not write about what the news usually show). Oh, and you can also write it as an Arab person and Muslim. Second, Confront these ideas! In the way similar to Leslie Silko’s confrontation of the US border patrol. Demand that society live up to aspirational notions of justice and fairness (recall the discussion of Angela Davis and her critique of the prison-industrial complex), and consider the ways that those who would let their presumptions about race/ethnicity guide their actions, can be constrained. Take some time to consider the everyday impact of racial and/or ethnic constructions on your life.

oral history of someone who is 65 years of age or older

For this paper you will write a 10-15 page double spaced 12 point font oral history of someone who is 65 years of age or older.

Your paper should record, in depth, the details that make up the course of the person’s life, and it should be based on an extensive series of interviews that you conduct throughout the quarter. Your interviewee may be a relative or just someone you know or want to know, but it should be someone who is willing and able to share the details of their life with you.

Therefore, interviews should be designed and arranged to capture and record accurately theexperiences that comprise your informant’s life.

Although the primary focus of this paper is recording the life experience of the person you are interviewing, and organizing that information into a chronological biography, you are encouraged to include any archival or genealogical research you may be able to conduct in concert with your interviewee.

Guide with series of questions is attached.

Social Media Usage

This assignment is an opportunity for you to connect the major patterns that emerged from your data to theories and concepts relevant to sociology of mass media. Many of you started this process in the data-theory connections section at the end of the Data assignment. The Discussion is an expansion and extension of that section.

This assignment should be written in paragraph form. It does not need to have an introduction and conclusion (although it can if you want), but should be written in paragraphs.

  • Before you begin, you’ll want to select two or three major findings/patterns in your data that you’d like to discuss. (Note: For many of you, these will be the “Themes,” taken right from your Data assignment. But if you’re not sure if you were on the right track for the Data assignment, you’re not stuck with the Themes you chose there, for this assignment.) This is basically answering the question: “What did you find in your data?” If you had to tell a friend about your project and your data, what would you tell them was interesting about your data, sociologically speaking? If you aren’t sure if your Themes will work well, please ask me or Amanda.
  • For each of these Themes/Findings, your discussion should consist of three things:
    • Interpretation of your findings/theme in terms of at least one theory relating to sociology of mass media. The theory/theories you choose should be about either media industry, media users, media technology, or media content and representation. It should be clear in your paper (and to you) which of these sections your theory is related to. Please ask me or Amanda if you’re not sure. The perspective you take in interpreting your data could be functionalist, critical, or interactionist, but I’d like you to choose a specific theory relating to either media industry, users, technology or content. (Note: The in-class Powerpoint slides that are posted on Canvas outline many of these theories. They are organized by date, however, not by content, so if you want to choose one from there you’d likely want to look through the slides from different dates to make sure you’re choosing the most appropriate theory to interpret your data.) You can use the same theory to discuss more than one theme, but the connection between the theory and each theme should be made explicit and clearly explained.

AmericanCareerCollege Social Structure And Process Theory

  1. What crime is addressed in your PSA? (The crime in my PSA is Undocumented immigration)
  2. Identify one “social structure” theory which might explain this phenomenon, defining the theory and demonstrating its fit within your criminal behavior.
  3. Identify one “social process” theory which might explain this phenomenon, defining the theory and demonstrating its fit within your criminal behavior.

Single parents Interview

This is an informal research project where you will be gathering the data by using the interview questionnaire provided and then writing up a quick analysis of your findings by integrating and applying what we have learned in class.

Therefore, this is a way for you to demonstrate how much you have learned and your ability to connect course material to real-life situations. This is the entire objective of this final project–show me how much you have learned 🙂

PLEASE NOTE: who you choose to interview must be in their current dynamic (e.g., parenthood, divorce, cohabitation) for at least a year in order to provide better perspective and cannot be related to you. Also, you CANNOT be related to them OR in a romantic relationship with your interviewee. This is to avoid bias and to increase the potential for honest answers.

Also, the textbook is the only reference needed. This paper is ALL about demonstrating your ability to utilize and apply what you have learned this semester to a real-life experience. Thus, COURSE APPLICATION IS CRITICAL!

Your paper should be filled with references to the textbook following proper APA format (authors, year and page number).

Providing a handful of references (e.g., 3-5 citations) will NOT be satisfactory.

*You should be constantly comparing your interviewee’s responses to what we have learned: how they align or differ or do not relate. Remember this is an analysis; not a restating of your interview notes. This is the most consistent error I find student’s make on this paper.

form of deviant behavior in American society.

1). Identify ONE form of deviant behavior in American society.

2) Conduct secondary research from your textbook, online sources, social media to find out as much information as possible about this form of deviance.

3) Using information (statistical and factual) from your textbook and all the other relevant sources, outline the factors responsible for this type of deviance. That is, discuss all the factors or conditions that can give rise to this form of deviance, discuss the various forms that behavior as well.

4) Think about the following theoretical frameworks discussed in your class— Functionalism, Labeling/Symbolic Interactionism, Conflict & Feminist Theories. Use ONE of the theory to explain why this form of deviance occurs.

5) Conclusion: What will happen in 5 years, 10 years or more if something is not done about the deviant behavior you are writing about?

Title; Develop a title for your paper; example: Pick-Pockets in Winston, USA.

Introduction: State what your research paper is about; you can state your objective here; you may re-word the question and use it as your introduction. You may also state the sources of your information example— in writing this research paper I used information from the PowerPoint slides provided for the course, textbook, YouTube and other social media sources. You may also state the format/structure of your work here—example—the paper begins with definition of key concepts and statistics about the deviant behavior, this is followed by a brief history, and then the factors responsible for this form of deviance.

Main Body 1: Define the deviant behavior and also all key concepts that you are using in the paper here; then state some the statistical data about the deviant behavior using a trend format—example, in 1980 there were 20,000 pick-pockets in NC, by 1985 the number has increased to 500,000, and by 2010 the number of pick-pocket thieves has ballooned to over one million.

Main Body 2: Provide a brief history about the deviant behavior if possible; this is sociology not history—only a short history about the form of deviant behavior. You must state your sources of information.

Environmental and Macro Level Barriers Analysis

Discussion of your Assessment (40 Points)

a) Elaborate upon and support your formulation using relevant theory, practice, and research literature. Rely on primary source literature to support your discussion of developmental and practice theory. (e.g., Quote Erikson directly from his work — not as cited in another author’s work.)

b) Identify relevant cultural issues that contribute to your understanding of the client, and elaborate upon the impact of socio-cultural issues on the identified problem(s).

c) Identify environmental and macro-level barriers, which might present obstacles to successful resolution of the identified problem. This section of the paper should include a discussion of the “person-in-situation” aspect of the case, looking at the way in which the client’s greater social environment plays a role in the development and maintenance of the identified problem and its solution. (e.g., the client requires treatment for a substance use disorder and the community is lacking in these services.

d) Identify any ethical dilemmas and steps taken to resolve them. If there are no ethical dilemmas that required your action in this case, elaborate on potential areas of ethical consideration.
