Essential Skills for Social Work Practice

Read the Parker Family Episode (Attached). The clients express hostility toward each other, as well as toward the social worker. In addition, Stephanie asks the social worker for self-disclosure when she asks, “Wouldn’t you?” and “You really think you can fix that?” The scene ends with the client and social worker falling into silence. Consider the challenges depicted in the video. How would you respond?

  • Explain when it would be appropriate to use self-disclosure.
  • Provide a specific example of the type of self-disclosure you might use in this scenario.
  • Identify an interviewing technique you learned from this week’s resources that you would use when working with this client.
  • Provide a specific example of the interviewing technique.
    • For example, if you would use an empathetic statement or an open-ended question to elicit information, provide a specific example of the statement or question that you would use.
  • Explain why you would use this technique.

Existing Tension Between Development and Environment

The Cost of Economic Growth

In Chapter 7: The Environment – Part II, Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss the existing tension between development and the environment. Development brings economic growth as well as social and environmental changes. To a developing country, economic growth may be of a higher priority than the consequences to the long-term health of its citizens or its environment. On the other hand, poverty can also harm the environment such as how searching for land to farm contributes to deforestation.

Do wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have responsibilities to the people and environment of that country? Why or why not? Be sure to use examples of existing companies to support your response

Toys Aisle at Walmart and Gender Socialization

Introduction

This WTL (Writing to Learn) assignment is a short assignment aimed to help develop your understandings of gender socialization. Childhood consumption reflects cultural constructions of femininity and masculinity and some have referred to this phenomenon as the “Cult of Pink and Blue”. However, this pattern is more than difference in color. The commodities of childhood including toys, games, and clothes reproduce gender difference and norms. This activity will allow you to examine empirical examples of how material culture is connected to the symbolic meanings of gender.

Directions

Chose an online store that sells children’s toys and clothes such as Target, Walmart, Amazon, Kohls, or Kmart. Browse the website and observe how the toys and clothes are constructing gender norms and roles. Then answer the following questions in 1-2 sentences each.

  • How are the toys/clothes different? Consider the type, color, what it is for, and what it represents.
  • How do the clothes or toys indicate different future roles for children as adult men and women?
  • How does the packaging reflect and reproduce commonly held ideas about genders?
  • Are there gender neutral toys or clothes? How do they differ?
  • What is the larger impact of children’s toys on society and the reproduction of the gender system?

American InterContinental Technological Development of Smart Phone Devices

To begin this assignment, think about some historical examples of social change, such as agricultural advancements (irrigation, the cotton gin), shifts to democratic governments, and civil rights movements. Then, begin thinking about social changes you have experienced more recently in your own life.

Write a paper that discusses the following 4 prompts. Use the information under each prompt to guide your responses:

  • Discuss a social change that you have experienced. Describe how this change impacted society as a whole and your own individual behaviors.
    • Was the social change positive or negative in your perspective?
    • Did your life get easier or harder-simplified or more complicated?
    • Has it been positive or negative for society?
  • Research a non-Western culture, and identify a recent social movement or social change they have experienced.
    • Describe the social change/movement, and how the social change impacted their society.
    • Discuss how globalization may or may not have impacted their social change. For example, consider how other societies may have influenced the social movement/change you identified OR how the social movement/change you identified impacted other societies, outside of its own.
    • Was the change well received or protested by the majority of social members in that society? Include examples and references to support your analysis.
  • Research and discuss one technological advancement that is being developed right now
