counterculture

AT LEAST 750 WORDS FOR SOCIOLOGY 101

The Discussion Forums are designed to facilitate dialogue and discussion of ideas and concepts, to ask and answer questions and share experiences related to specific course materials.

Choose a deviant subculture/counterculture that interests you. Please present us with a different deviant sub/counterculture than examples from class. You cannot use the Transhumanist Movement or the medicalization/legalization of marijuana. You may provide a link if your group has an online presence. Why is your chosen group deviant? (i.e., behavioral, conditional, ascribed, public, etc). Are they a subculture or counterculture? Why? What types of norms do they violate? What sanctions might they experience? How might Labeling Theory and the concepts derived from this theory apply to your chosen deviant group? How might the relativist/social power perspective apply to your group? Do you see your deviant group moving into mainstream culture like the marijuana industry or the body/bio hacking movement? Remember, deviance is in the “eye of the beholder” and we are taking a sociological approach without judgment.

1) Break your Long Discussion Post into logical, flowing sections/paragraphs.

2) Bold the class terms/concepts you use.

4) Cite your outside source(s) at the end of your post in whatever format you like (e.g., APA, ASA, MLA, etc.)

You must include 1-2 (at least 1) outside credible source into your long post. Please see the videos on credible/academic source in the introduction materials. Sources may include CREDIBLE newspapers, magazines, websites or ACADEMIC books or articles.

Bullying in Schools Quantitative Research

For Part II of your final project, you will comprehensively evaluate an article of your choice that reports on a quantitative study. (Remember, a quantitative study uses numbers as data.) Locate an article in the professional literature that addresses a topic you are interested in. Remember to use the Area of Interest interactive (Links to an external site.) to guide you in the selection process. The article you select should describe a quantitative study and should have all or most of the expected sections, either with their own headings or embedded in the article: Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, Results, and Discussion.

In writing your evaluation of the article, you will use Section 5.7 in your text. Do not simply tell what is in the article, but evaluate it using the questions in your text. Explain and justify your evaluation based on specific examples from the article.

Your paper should be 2100-2800 words in length (not counting the title, abstract, and reference pages) and comprehensively evaluate an article of a quantitative study. Use proper APA formatting and good writing and organization in your evaluation paper.

Why There Are Few Women Leaders

There are two parts and the chapter material is in the file I upload

1. the first part is to clarify your thought about question,(no less than 200 words)

Here is the question:For this last discussion forum of the semester, tell me what connections do you see between Sandberg’s points and concepts mentioned in the chapter? And moreover, in your own words, explain what she means and also tell me whether you agree or disagree with her advice and why

2.Here is the second part which you need to make a comment about the others thoughts.(no less than 125 words)

Here is the others’ response:

In Sandberg’s presentation, she talks about why women can not get promotions. She points out that in multiple challenging fields, men take the majority of the population, whereas women become the minority. This difference in amount is also known as the sex segregation. Besides, I think this issue is related to the concept of the glass ceiling in Chapter 10 by Giddens. A lack of resources or support blocks women’s entry to a higher position. Even though they are capable of specific jobs, they stay in the same place. Sandberg explains this issue further by giving an example of stereotypes toward women. When hearing two names, “Heidi” and “Howard” in the same situation, people tend to be in favor of “Howard” more. This is the result of gender inequality because “Heidi” receives a different treatment in terms of sex.

Applying Sociology Paper #2

Purpose: This is a time when students can actually apply the material they have read in the book and we have discussed in class to their everyday world. This is a constructive learning tool because it not only allows students to develop their writing, but it also empowers students to voice their theories and opinions. However, it should not be used as a time to mock or condemn other cultures or others’ beliefs. I would encourage students to constructively criticize an issue with respect and not attack in an uneducated manner.

Guidelines:

  • Select a social issue that when you started the class was believed to be a “private trouble,” but you have since learned that society is not helping with this issue and is in fact a public issue. I want you to develop your Sociological Imagination and consider how this issue may affect you.
  • I want students to research this topic using your textbook and other academic materials including the inclusion of at least 2 academic journal articles. I would encourage students use CTC library journal database and go beyond the Internet searches. I will NOT accept wiki sites, as they can be unreliable and not academic.
  • Questions I would like you to address when writing your paper. (These are a starting point. Please feel free, and I encourage you to, go above and beyond these questions. Also, if all of these questions do not fit your paper, then expand past them.)
    • What is the sociological issue that you are addressing?
    • Why did you pick this subject to write on?
    • Why did you feel that this was a private issue?
    • What role does society have in this issue? Explain and provide examples/supporting evidence.
    • Why is it important to study the issue in Sociology?
      • What does Functionalists think of the issue? Conflict theorists?
    • Why is it important to address the issue to the general public (outside of academia)?
      • What would be some of the potential positive consequences of addressing the issue?
      • What would be some of the negative consequences of addressing this issue?
