Overview Culture and race are terms that often are used interchangeably. However, culture can vary within a race and it is important to understand the ways in which culture varies by geographic region, socioeconomic background, education, and other variables. While a course in multicultural counseling often focuses on race, it is important to look at cultural differences/similarities as well. Because many counseling models have been developed for the majority population, multicultural courses have often neglected to include discussions about European Americans. Cultural differences for European Americans can be just as distinct as those between individuals of two races. Assignment 4 will help you to examine strategies for improving your multicultural competence and for providing services to European Americans. Before you complete it, review the supplemental materials, and use the rubric as a guide to help you complete the assignment. This assignment will count toward your final grade, is due by Day 7, and is worth 75 points. Directions Read your textbook chapters and review the assigned video. To complete this assignment, address the following questions (one or two pages). What are some of the unique challenges faced by European Americans? (1-2 paragraphs) What can you do to increase your level of multicultural competence in working with individuals from various European American backgrounds? (1-2 paragraphs). What stereotypes should counselors of European Americans be aware of and work to avoid? Reflect on your learning experience related to multicultural counseling and counseling European Americans across the lifespan. Discuss how you can better serve clients from these cultural backgrounds in your school or clinic (2-4 paragraphs).

Module Two Discussion – 60 points For this week’s discussion forum, respond to the following questions: This week you considered how issues and changes in society impact couples and families and how a counselor might help couples and families remedy the problems that may result. You specifically looked at the different types of family structures such as single parent families and blended families. As a family counselor, it is important to understand the role of evidence-based practice in working with families of all types. This week, you will examine specific research that will inform your work as a scholar-practitioner working with various family structures. For this week’s discussion forum, respond to the following: Using research and evidence to inform clinical practice is an ethical, professional, and legal imperative for counselors working with couples and families. In this Discussion, you will consider specific research that might influence your future practice as a scholar-practitioner working with single parent families and blended families. Review this week’s Learning Resources. Be sure to focus on ways to connect research and practice, and consider how counselors might use current research for working with single parent families and blended families. Perform an academic search in the Lamar University Library and select a scholarly article from a peer-reviewed journal that provides empirical support for an issue, intervention, or ethical practice that relates to single parent or blended families. Think about how this article might influence your work as a scholar-practitioner. With these thoughts in mind Post by Day 4 an explanation, based on the current research in the article you selected as well as the information you learned in this course, of how research might inform your practice with single parent and blended families. Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings. Respond by Day 6 to at least three of your colleagues who chose different articles. Expand on your colleague’s posting in one of the following ways: Identify at least two ways that the reading material from Gladding (2014) relates to the article selected by your colleague. Discuss a theory or technique that might be useful for the points made by your colleague. Identify another research article that either supports or refutes your colleague’s findings and discuss it. Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made. Use examples to support your ideas. Be sure to cite your points using the learning resources. You may also use other scholarly literature to support your discussion. Citations and references must be in APA format. See the grading rubric for more information. Peer Response: In order to meet minimum requirements, respond to at least 3 peers on 3 different days with substantive responses and support these responses with references. Postings for the discussion board are due by Day 4, and responses are due by Day 6.

Overview
This course has three written assignments that build upon one another and are designed to take you step-by-step through a process of writing a paper that identifies an ethical question, examines the context, issues, and arguments surrounding the question, and attempts to defend an answer to that question using strong moral reasoning.
In the Week 1 assignment, “Ethical Question,” you chose an ethical question, provided an introduction, a position statement and supporting reason, and an opposing position statement and supporting reason.
In the Week 3 assignment, “Applying an Ethical Theory,” you explained utilitarianism, deontology, or virtue ethics, including its core moral principle or ideal, and applied that theory to the topic by demonstrating how its principles would support a particular position on your ethical question.
