Controversies and Challenges of Vaccination

Controversies and Challenges of Vaccination

Vaccine controversies have occurred since almost 80 years before the terms vaccine and vaccination were introduced, and continue to this day. Despite scientific consensus that recommended vaccines are safe and effective, unsubstantiated scares regarding their safety still occur, resulting in outbreaks and deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases. Please provide your input regarding this subject.

Psychological Reactions to Illness

Psychological Reactions to Illness

It is often said that the only thing in life that is certain is death. In your own lives, the lives of our loved ones and friends, and in the lives of our patients, being diagnosed with a serious illness brings with it the inevitable fear of that certainty becoming reality.

Share in this forum something that you think is a psychological reaction to illness, and if you think this reaction is detrimental, how is it detrimental? If you think the reaction you are describing might have a positive effect for the individual, describe how.

Analysis of Diet Tracking Apps

 Analysis of Diet Tracking Apps

Computers and cell phone apps have become commonplace, making dietary analysis more accessible to millions of people. As a result, many diet tracking apps and web-based programs have emerged and are now readily available. For this assignment, you will analyze two pre-selected diet tracking apps or web-based programs. You must pick from the list which you will find in the file titled, “Directions for App Analysis.”

Each app and/or program you evaluate is worth ten points if you complete the assignment correctly. You can only evaluate an app/web-based program once.

ONLY USE THE FREE VERSION OF THE APPS/WEB-BASED PROGRAMS. DO NOT PAY. You may have to use the free week for some apps. For most, you will have to set up an account. If you need to enter height, weight, and sex, use the values in the instruction pdf. Do not enter personal data.

Three files are attached to this assignment. The pdf file explains how to complete each analysis. Be sure to read this file before you start. The Excel file contains the preset food list and two spreadsheets where you will enter the data. The Word file contains the consent form. You may agree or disagree with allowing Dr. Byerley to use your data. You must fill out the consent form.

Briefly, you will select an app/web-based program from the list in the instructions. You will download the app to your cell phone and enter the required data. The data is a preset list of food (you will find in it the Excel file) selected from the most common foods Americans eat. These may not be foods you eat, but they are the foods you need to enter into the app/web-based program. Once you find the food, you need to enter the phrase the app/web-based program used to describe the food into the attached Excel file on the spreadsheet titled, “Foods for App Analysis.” When you have completed entering all the foods, take a screenshot of the analysis, and enter that into the Excel file on the page titled, “Nutrient Analysis.”

Upload the consent form and Excel file in the assignment area and submit for grading.

If you analyze more than one app, use a new Excel file for each.

Experiencing Childhood Trauma and Mental Health

Experiencing Childhood Trauma and Mental Health

Just read the article and answer four questions,

This is the article:

Mental illness refers to a wide range of disorders that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. Mental illness can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, social standing, religion or race/ethnicity. People with mental illness often experience distress and problems functioning at work, home and in social situations. Mental illness is not something the person can “overcome with willpower,” and can be caused by biological factors such as genes or brain chemistry, trauma and abuse, and family history of mental illness.

The major types of illnesses are

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood disorders, including bipolar Personality disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Trauma disorders
  • Eating disorders

1. What are two main factors that can contribute to mental illness?

A. Weakness or deficit in personality

B Having a coexisting disability

C experiencing childhood trauma

D None of the above

Why does stigma matter? Stigma embraces both prejudicial attitudes and discriminating behavior towards individuals with mental health problems, and the social effects of this include exclusion, poor social support, poorer subjective quality of life, and low self-esteem (Livingston & Boyd, 2010). As well as it’s effect on the quality of daily living, stigma also has a detrimental effect on treatment outcomes, and so hinders efficient and effective recovery from mental health problems (Perlick, Rosenheck, Clarkin, Sirey et al., 2001). In particular, self-stigma is correlated with poorer vocational outcomes (employment success) and increased social isolation (Yanos, Roe & Lysaker, 2010). These factors alone represent significant reasons for attempting to eradicate mental health stigma and ensure that social inclusion is facilitated and recovery can be efficiently achieved.

2. What is the main reason it is important to recognize mental health stigma?

A. Movies released between 1990-2010 that depicted at least one character with schizophrenia, found that most schizophrenic characters displayed violent behavior, one-third of these violent characters engaged in homicidal behavior, and a quarter committed suicide.

B. The popular press and entertainment media play a major role in perpetuating stigma related to mental health.

C. The medical model makes it seem like mental health issues are always biological in nature.

D. Stigma leads to discrimination and exclusion, and hinders the effective treatment and/or recovery, as well as life quality.

Alzheimers Disease Treatment Policy

Current statistics shows that Alzheimer’s disease cost American businesses more than $33 billion annually ($26 billion due to lost productivity of caregivers and $7 billion due to costs for health and long term care)[Source of figures from the Alzheimer’s Association web site]. Moreover, 50% of nursing home patients suffer from Alzheimer’s or a related disorder.

Alz and Dementia - cost to the nation

Many millenials are being impacted by caregiving – check out this information from a USC study of millenial caregivers for dementia patients.

A Profile of Millenial Dementia Caregivers

I want you to design public/federal/state – whatever, government policy that will ease the pain of caring for Alzheimer’s disease patients. For example, investment incentives so you can help your parents later in life or extensions to the family leave act. Policies that would help families to take care of their demented members? Come on guys! You all just got elected to congress – do something!
