I do not agree with this claim; this is because the community is considered low-income, this means whenever the meetings were hosted, the community residents were probably busy at work or were preoccupied with life. Furthermore, it could be a situation where they never knew exactly what the meeting was about or the time and location of the meeting.

Consider the principle of social justice and include recommendations for what should have been done prior to the council meeting to ensure that the decision was ethical, fair, and valid.

What should have happened was someone from the toxic waste team going around the community door by door explaining what is happening, such as the location of the facility, the disadvantage, the advantage, will it benefit the community, and will it provide jobs for the community. Also, work with the community in hosting the meeting at a time that is appropriate. Also, send out emails, phone calls or zoom/skype on the details of the meetings that the residents missed so that they are up to date on the progress.

 

Describe two strategies you would implement to engage this community in advocacy for health equity.

 

Health inequality is providing an opportunity to people based on their needs or ability. A strategy that that should be implemented to engage this community in advocacy for health equity is based on environmental factors. For example, the toxic waste dump could be dangerous for the community because of air and water pollution. Therefore, a law to make sure that the company provides a free water filter to the entire community to prevent water pollution health problems. The second strategy is to provide free full medical checkups 4 times a year for the resident to make sure they are not getting sick from air and water pollution to prevent a community with a high cancer rate and having the babies being born with deformities and disabilities (Centers for diseases control and prevention, 2020).

I would disagree with this notion and not urge my state senator and lawmaker to support that bill. My reasons for this decision is because if an 18 years old American can join the military and fight for their country and vote, therefore an 18-year-old should be able to drink and smoke whatever tobacco product they want. These 18 years are learning how to shoot a gun, how to protect themselves in a foreign land and etc., and taking the responsibility of voting, which can change the future of the country and laws that are enacted. Yet, we are worried about whether they should be able to smoke or not.

The strategy or approach I would implement regarding the effectiveness of communicating the issue with my state senator is getting to know the legislators by finding out what and why they want to promote this law. I would like to know how would it help public health, would it prevent discrimination. For example, the lower class community compared to the upper-class community might not have the same outcome in regards to the implementation of the law. I would also like to know if there is a penalty, if so, would it be fair or just in terms of the community and socioeconomic status of the person. Furthermore, I will need to know the strengths and weaknesses of the policy. Afterward, I would discuss my concerns, and why I initially disagreed with the law, but keep an open mind to the disadvantage that may occur to the public health based on my initial opinion (American Public Health Association, 2021).
