Community Health

Community Health

The school nurse has a unique role in the provision of school health services for children with special health needs. Including children with chronic illnesses and disabilities with various degrees of severity. This case describes the role of the school nurse caring for a child with type 1 diabetes.

Susan has two students with type 1 diabetes in her school. One requires blood glucose monitoring and daily insulin injections, while the other has a continuous insulin infusion pump. The incidence of type 1 diabetes presents a complex challenge to school healthcare providers. Type 1 diabetes ranks as the second most common chronic illness in childhood. Second only to asthma.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA, 2015). Reports that about 193,000 Americans under age 20 live with diabetes and 17,900 are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes annually, and another 5,300 with type 2 diabetes. Children with diabetes are considered disabled. And as such are protected under federal laws that prohibit discrimination against children with disabilities. Studies show that the majority of school personnel have an inadequate understanding of effective diabetes management. It is best for the student to monitor blood glucose and respond to the results as quickly as possible to avoid possible complications.

  1. What are the essential elements of a diabetes medical management plan for each student with diabetes in the school?
  2. When the school nurse is unavailable. Who is legally responsible for providing care to a child with diabetes?

responsibilities of community and public health nurses in promoting health

This was a course of commuity health nursing taken online.

These are some of te discutions we have done in class.

What are the responsibilities of community and public health nurses in promoting health and decreasing illness and injury in populations, families, and individuals?

What health factors can nurses address to work with young males of a community to improve overall health?

Why is it the case that single men are prominently represented in the homeless? Is there a primary prevention program that could be a part of a public health initiative that would address this cohort specifically?

emotional support and active lifestyle

emotional support and active lifestyle

The word health is defined as a state of complete emotional and physical well-being (Felman, 2020).  An individual’s health can be affected in many ways by family, friends, and the community.  Some of the ways that family and friends can affect an individual in a positive manner are contributing towards their emotional support and active lifestyle.  The community can contribute to an individual by providing access to healthcare.  On the opposite side, family and friends can have a negative affect on an individual as well.  Some family and friends may be nonexistent in an individual’s life or they may not be as supportive as one needs them to be.  The community can also affect an individual’s health and lifestyle by having a lack of access to healthcare.

Many people rely on their friends and family for emotional support.  Some may look for advice or just need someone to listen to them.  Others may find pleasure and happiness just being around those they love.  There is evidence that has shown that social connections can affect the levels of stress in an individual which can then adversely affect coronary arteries, gut function, insulin regulation, and the immune system (Harvard Health Publishing, 2019).  Some individuals also enjoy doing physical activities with friends and families either because they are looking to live a healthier lifestyle or just because they enjoy the company.  Friends and families can also be great motivators for those that need the extra push.

emotional support

Although some families may provide the love and support that some may need, there are other individuals that either do not have family and friends or they do but they are not as supportive as an individual may need.  If a person looks for the support from friends and family in an emotional or physical way and does not receive it, it may affect the individual physically and/or emotionally.  The person may become depressed or stressed which can then lead to a sedentary lifestyle and create health risks.  There are studies that show negative relationships with family and friends can lead to poorer health which can then reduce the life expectancy of an individual (Harvard Health Publishing, 2019).

The community has a great effect on an individual’s health and lifestyle.  There are many factors that contribute to it as well.  If an individual lives in a higher population area, the healthcare accessibility is much better than those that live in a rural area.  An individual would have more options for transportation to reach the healthcare services, there would be more services for indigent individuals, more resources readily available, and a greater variety of healthcare services.  Those in a rural area may struggle to get transportation, have limited resources, and lack of knowledge of healthcare services available to them.  Not having the resources, education, or accessibility available to individuals would greatly decrease the over health of an individual and would also decrease the life expectancy.

significant role in an individual’s health outcome

REPLY 2

Social factors such as family, friends, and community play a significant role in an individual’s health outcome. Humans are social beings that were created to be around other people and to interact with each other. Therefore, the social interaction between a person and his family, friends, and community within society has several health benefits and negative effects. There is a higher probability that individuals who fit into society are more content; thus, they become physically healthier and mentally stable. Foremost, a positive relationship and interaction with friends, family, and community help a person avoid mental illnesses.

Support, care, a6nd love from family members, friends, and community promote happiness and help individuals deal with various problems they face in society. Friends and family often give support and care to their loved ones, helping them reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are primary causes of mental illness (Pössel, Burton, Cauley, Sawyer, Spence & Sheffield, 2018). Therefore the care, support, and love help reduce stress and other causes of mental illnesses in society. Individuals experiencing love, care, and support from family, community, and friends may feel a greater sense of self-worth and confidence, promoting their well-being. Optimism, self-esteem, confidence, and greater self-worth positively affect people’s mental health and well-being.

integral role in healthy eating habits

Family members and friends also play a role in shaping others’ behavior by providing encouragement and support for a healthier lifestyle and behavior. For instance, friends and family encourage each other to engage in physical exercise and healthy eating habits for positive well-being (Pössel et al., 2018). Friends can encourage each other to engage in physical exercises so that they remain fit. Family plays an integral role in healthy eating habits because they may encourage their loved ones to consume fewer fats and sugars, which may cause obesity and diabetes.

Family, friends and community may negatively affect individual health and lifestyle. For instance, through the influence of friends and peer pressure, many people find themselves engaging in risky health behaviors such as alcohol consumption and smoking (Alvarez, Kawachi & Romani, 2017). Too much consumption of alcohol increases the chances of addiction and deadly diseases like liver cirrhosis. Cigarette smoking also causes lung cancer and other respiratory diseases that affect the health and lifestyle of individuals.

Communities may also affect individual health and lifestyle through risky health behaviors such as pollution. Communities may have cultures that may have negative impacts on the health and lifestyle of individuals. Families may have a culture of unhealthy eating habits or excessive time spent on screens and social media, which affects their bond and relationship. Therefore, family may grow apart, and this may affect the health and well-being of children as they grow up in a toxic environment.

emotional support and active lifestyle

Family may also have a negative impact on individual health and lifestyle, especially those in distressful marriages and toxic family relationships. For instance, children who grow up in families experiencing domestic violence, conflict, and misunderstanding tend to develop negative psychological traits and attitudes (Alvarez et al., 2017). Children may develop stress and depression from negligence and child abuse in a toxic family; thus, their self-esteem and confidence are reduced, hindering them from dealing with situations.

Nursing Informatics Competencies

Nursing Informatics Competencies

Purpose

The self-assessment is completed using the TIGER-based Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies (TANIC) tool. To the extent that information technology is reshaping healthcare practices or promises to improve patient care, healthcare professionals must possess certain competencies which will assist with consistency and quality. Which two competencies did you achieve in this course? Explain.

HEALTH-RELATED POLICIES

Running Head: HEALTH-RELATED POLICIES 1

HEALTH-RELATED POLICIES 6

Health policies entail the actions, plans, and decisions made by relevant parties and are meant to accomplish significant healthcare goals in a country. Health policies are associated with the attainment of several things among the future definition. They offer a model for primacies and the expected duties and responsibilities of distinct teams, including encouraging consensus and allowing people to understand more about health. This paper explores various health bills, including H.R.4704 Advancing Research to Prevent Suicide, H.R.1418 Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act, and H.R.5663 Safeguarding Therapeutics Act.

H.R.4704 Advancing Research to Prevent Suicide

Summary of the Bill and Riders

The H.R.4704 Advancing Research to Prevent Suicide Act of 2019 was presented and introduced by Republican McAdams Ben on October 16, 2019. The bill is responsible for directing the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide reviewed grants to higher education institutions. According to Congress.Gov (2021), the grants advocated for by the bill are meant to enhance multidisciplinary research that is related to suicide. The bill encourages studies related to preventing suicide and treating any complication that would prompt suicidal thoughts. It addresses the gaps evident in suicide prevention and treatment research by encouraging various parties, including doctoral students, to apply for the NSF grants.

Population Affected by the Issue

The bill presents an opportunity and platform for further studies that will benefit several populations. Funding research regarding suicide prevention and treatment, the bill can help veterans that have been affected by Post-Traumatic Disorder (PTSD) who contemplate suicide. The legislation will also affect adolescents that experience significant life challenges, along with ill patients.

Role of Healthcare Experts

Professionals in the medical field are crucial because they help educated affected members regarding the legislation and what it means for healthcare. In the past, research and education about suicide have been limited, making it important for experts, such as nurses and physicians, to understand how the legislation affects suicide prevention.

Pros and Cons

One advantage of this bill is that it will help prevent suicides across several United States populations. Increasing suicide rates among depressed teens will be eliminated after research enhances suicide prevention. One disadvantage connected with this bill is that there will be excessive use of funds, which does not guarantee positive results in the field. Even though research can help prevent suicide, it may not effectively reduce suicides among vulnerable populations.

Expert Testimony and Personal Opinion

Little et al. (2016) explain that researchers and other academics must come together to ensure they prevent suicide among vulnerable populations. The researchers indicate that the Advancing Research to Prevent Suicide Act of 2019 is effective legislation for the process. I believe the introduction of the bill is beneficial to vulnerable populations that are at risk of suicide.

H.R.1418 Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act

Summary of the Bill and Riders

The H.R.1418 Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2020 was introduced on February 28, 2019, and was sponsored by Democrat Peter A. DeFazio. The bill underwent the House and Senate committees and became Public Law on January 13, 2021. The legislation presents that nothing supersedes or modifies antitrust law operations regarding health insurance, including dental insurance operations (Congress.Gov, 2021). The Public Law also prohibits unfair courses of action in health insurance competition.

Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act

Population Affected

The H.R.1418 Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act will be affected by several populations, including medical professionals and patients. Health insurance providers in the US are also affected by the act because it prohibits unfair competition. For patients, the law may protect them from unfair exposure to expensive insurance plans.

Role of Medical Experts

Medical experts understand the cost of insurance and how it affects patients. For this reason, they can play a crucial role by advocating for this Public legislation and ensuring that it is adhered to and ascertain that all insurance providers act accordingly.

Pros and Cons

The legislation is beneficial to patients and other people in the US because it protects them from insurance providers’ unfair methods. It also ensures the providers adhere to the law when dealing with all forms of insurance. However, the disadvantage of this law is that it may limit the operations of insurance providers.

Expert Testimony and Personal Opinion

Lexology (2020) criticizes the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2020 by presenting that it negatively affects competition because it limits insurance providers’ operations. Individually, I think the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act is detrimental because it may lead to higher insurance premiums.

H.R.5663 Safeguarding Therapeutics Act

Summary of the Bill and Riders

The H.R.5663 Safeguarding Therapeutics Act is sponsored by Republican Brett Guthrie, a representative for Kentucky congressional district (GovTrack.gov, n.d). The bill was enacted after being signed by former US President Donald Trump on January 05, 2021. The legislation extends the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to certain products from other countries, including medical devices (Congressional Budget Office, 2020).

Population Affected

The legislation affects many parties, including healthcare organizations that import medical devices from other countries. It may lead to the destruction of several medical devices by the FDA, leading to the loss of millions.

The Role of Medical Experts

In recent years, counterfeit medical products have increased in the markets, which impacts effective healthcare delivery. For this reason, medical professionals need to ensure that the legislation is followed and active under the FDA. Medical professionals should lead the destruction of counterfeit medical devices.

Pros and Cons

One advantage of the Safeguarding Therapeutics Act is that it ensures counterfeit medical devices are destroyed, leading to effective medical care for patients that the counterfeit devices would have impacted. However, one disadvantage of this legislation is that it may cost the FDA millions in destroying these contrabands.
