decision making in public policy

Reading and critically analyzing academic research in journal articles is an important part of learning and applying scholarly research for multiple applications within your discipline. The first four weeks of this course discussed the various components of research design. Your final assignment is an academic research-article critique. The purpose of this critique is to ensure that you know how to read and critically assess research for use in your own research, understand social problems in society, support decision making in public policy, or to influence one’s own individual research.

For this final assignment, read and critically review one of the journal articles listed below:

purpose of the study

Next, apply the methods detailed in Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.) to critique the article you selected. At a minimum, the critique should include the following information:

  • Introduction (about two pages): Summarize the article you chose, including the purpose of the study, the methodology utilized, the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn by the author(s) utilizing questions posed in the reading. Utilize questions posed in the “Analyze the Text” section of Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.) to develop this section.
  • Body (about five pages): Highlight the quality of the research article (both the strengths and weaknesses) as expressed through each section of the paper (i.e., introduction, methods, results, discussion, overview). Use questions posed in the “Evaluate the Text” section of “Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.)” to develop this section. Follow the “Evaluate the Text” prompts and include the following:
  • ethical application of research methods

    • Critique whether the researcher used the appropriate and ethical application of research methods in relation to their research goals.
    • Assess whether the application of quantitative methods approaches. Qualitative methods approaches or a combination (mixed methods) was appropriate in the article research.
    • Interpret data and empirical findings in the research through an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses.
    • Examine the role of the research design in the article by defending.Or critiquing the research method based on your assessment.
    • Support the impact of the research by determining if it benefits social policy, theoretical knowledge, or both.

The Academic Research-Article Critique paper

These theories

These theories provide different frameworks for looking at and understanding social justice issues, including crime more generally. In the final paper for the course. You are being asked to write an essay that demonstrates both your critical thinking skills. And your understanding of (at least) one of the theoretical perspective from the class. Your task is to select both a theory and a larger social issue/problem. To explain both of these. And then to explain the role your chosen theory specifically plays in understanding/addressing the social issue you have chosen.

So, for instance, you could pick anomie or strain theory and use this to explain the current rise in crime rates. You could explain how conflict theory helps to understand voter suppression, wealth inequality, or even climate change. Or, you could use control theory to explain why early childhood development is so important and argue for nationalized child-care. The theory you select and the problem/issue you examine is up to you.

Your paper should do the following:

  1. Elaborate/summarize the main tenets/points of the theoretical perspective you have chosen.
  2. Discuss the larger social issue/problem you have identified.
  3. Explain why the theory you have chosen helps explain/understand/address the social issue/problem you have identified.
  4. From a social policy/criminal justice/societal perspective, discuss at least TWO ways in which this issue/problem can be dealt with and how your chosen theory does or does not contribute  to (or does/does not inform) the solution.

Your essay must be 1,500 – 2,000 words in length(approximately 5-8 pages double spaced) , double spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font, using one-inch margins, and appropriate citations included using the ASA or APA citation style.

Healthcare Security

Right now, you are starting out and learning about HIM. With luck and perseverance, one day you will be running the show. Put yourself in a leadership HIM position for this assignment.

Review and read this article: Healthcare Security – What Your Practice Needs to Know

Focus on section 3:

Establish security rules. Humans are the weakest link in the security chain. A single user can compromise an entire organization by simply opening a spam email.

·  Inform your staff about ransomware attack possibilities and the importance of healthcare security.

·  Create rules to remind employees that they should never open attachments they are not expecting

·  Implore them to double-check email addresses before opening.

·  Discourage users from downloading software from unknown sites

·  Educate them about ransomware scare tactics, such as fake pages that claim the FBI has locked a device due to suspicion of downloading illicit files.

Customize staff reminders on EHR security best practices.

Include the following aspects in the assignment:

Ø  Compose a 3-5-minute speech in which you cover the 5 points above

Ø  Your speech should include the consequences to the organization of not following these practices

Ø  Your speech should include the consequences to the employee of not following these practices

Ø  Tape your speech to send to all staff using Vocaroo (or another audio file tool)

Ø  Submit the link to your speech to the drop box

Ø  Cite any references used. As always, proper grammar, sentence structure, and spelling is required

End of Life Decisions

The practice of health care providers at all levels brings you into contact with people from a variety of faiths. This calls for knowledge and understanding of a diversity of faith expressions; for the purpose of this course, the focus will be on the Christian worldview.

Based on “Case Study: End of Life Decisions,” the Christian worldview. And the worldview questions presented in the required topic study materials you will complete an ethical analysis of George’s situation. And his decision from the perspective of the Christian worldview.

Provide a 1,500-2,000-word ethical analysis while answering the following questions:

  1. How would George interpret his suffering in light of the Christian narrative, with an emphasis on the fallenness of the world?
  2. How would George interpret his suffering in light of the Christian narrative, with an emphasis on the hope of resurrection?
  3. As George contemplates life with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), how would the Christian worldview inform his view about the value of his life as a person?
  4. What sorts of values and considerations would the Christian worldview focus on in deliberating about whether or not George should opt for euthanasia?
  5. Given the above, what options would be morally justified in the Christian worldview for George and why?
  6. Based on your worldview, what decision would you make if you were in George’s situation?

Remember to support your responses with the topic study materials.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is required.

work of art titled Ash Road by Michael Mulhern

Professor and Class,

For this discuss post, I have chosen to discuss option three. Which entails choosing a work of art that represents a real-life event. I have chosen the work of art titled Ash Road by Michael Mulhern. This work of art is a painting that was created by a person that lived in an apartment building near the Twin Towers during the events of 9/11.

As all of us know on September 11th, 2001. The Twin Towers in New York were struck by airplanes. And resulted in a tragedy. As you can see in the image of the painting I attached below. The painting has a lot of gray coloring and it is difficulty to make out any distinct images in the painting. This is because the artist wanted to represent what it was like during 9/11 and all the smoke. And ash that was around that area (Guardian News and Media, 2016).

It is very interesting and moving to see a representation of this event from somebody who experienced the event firsthand. I believe that the artist depicted the event correctly throughout their work of art. Because they actually lived the events and were able to illustrate that throughout their work. The artist does not really make changes to the event throughout their work of art. And I think the painting is able to tell a story without being too busy. And taking away from being thought provoking about the event that took place. Michael Mulhern says that he watched from his ninth floor studio as the building collapse and the amount of debris and smoke take over the town (Edwards, 2021).

First Art Exhibition

The artists statement and interview definitely matches up with his work and the chaos. And smoke covered town is accurately represented in his painting. As we learned during week one of this course. Many pieces of art from different genres provoke thought and are able to tell a story and it is definitely coming full circle this week (Martin & Jacobus, 2018). 9/11 Museum Holds First Art Exhibition (Guardian News and Media, 2016) References Edwards, E. Diagnostic Criteria for Cannabis Use Disorder

Cannabis Use Disorder

Cannabis, which is commonly called Marijuana, is the most abused illegal substance, and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the active ingredient in Cannabis, makes Cannabis an addictive substance (Patel & Marwaha, 2019). Cannabis is considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Schedule One drug, and it has no accepted medical purpose and is with high abuse tendencies (Patel & Marwaha, 2019).

Diagnostic Criteria for Cannabis Use Disorder

According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013), in order to diagnose a person with Cannabis Use Disorder, at least two of the following criteria will be met within a 12-momth period:

  • Cannabis is taken in larger amount or over a longer period
  • There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control the use
  • A great deal of time is spent on activities to obtain Cannabis or use the substance
  • Cravings or urge to use Cannabis
  • Recurrent Cannabis use which causes failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, home, or school
  • Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of Cannabis use
  • There is Withdrawal as manifested by a need for markedly increased amounts of Cannabis to achieve intoxication or desired effects

Evidenced-Based for Psychotherapeutic and Psychopharmacologic Treatment for Cannabis Use Disorder

It is important that psychiatric clinicians should be able to identify patients who have issues with Cannabis Disorder and provide education and effective evidence-based treatments (Brezing & Levin, 2017). Psychotherapy has been proven effective in the treatment of Cannabis Use Disorder, and according to Walther, Gantner, Heinz, and Majic (2016), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) ranks high and effective among other psychotherapy in the treatment of Cannabis Use Disorder. Walther, et. al. (2016) also posited that a study which CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) combined for the treatment of Cannabis Use Disorder showed a reduction in the use of Cannabis compared with the control group after 4 months; hence, CBT in combination with MET achieved significantly higher abstinence rates and a more marked reduction in use compared with online CBT alone.

Williams and Hill (2019) pointed out that no medications have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of Cannabis Use Disorder, unlike Opioid Use Disorder that has FDA-approved medications. On the other hand, as emphasized by Williams and Hill (2019), there are several off-label medications available for the treatment of Cannabis cravings, treatment of Cannabis withdrawal symptoms, and treatment of Comorbid psychiatric disorders that may be the contributing factor in the frequent use of Cannabis. Medications that research has proven to be effective for preventing craving include Naltrexone in a single dose of 50mg daily and Bupropion between 150 and 450mg daily, and this is said to work via Dopamine and Norepinephrine that are FDA approved for smoking cessation (Williams & Hill, 2019).

Withdrawal symptoms can occur when patients are trying to stop or being treated to stop the cravings of cannabis which can result in the patient not being willing to continue treatment. Withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, and irritability which can persist for weeks or even months beyond the last use of Cannabis (Williams & Hill, 2019). SSRI medications and SNRI, Hydroxyzine Alpha-2 agonist, and Gabapentin can be effective in the treatment of withdrawal symptoms and medications for sleep (Williams & Hill, 2019). It is also pivotal to treat comorbid psychiatric problems in order to stop addictive behaviors that may be the cause of Cannabis use.

Clinical Features that I Would Expect to Observe in a Client that May Have Cannabis Use Disorder

There are some clinical features that may indicate that a patient may have Cannabis Use Disorder, and these may include red eyes, lack of appearance and personal hygiene, secrecy or deception about one’s actions or whereabouts, dry mouth, lack of ability to focus or concentrate, impaired sensory perception, lack of fatigue, weight gain, memory problem, and poor decision-making skills, (Wellness Resource Center, 2021). The DSM-5 criteria that support my rationale are that the patient spends a great deal of time in activities to obtain and use Cannabis, and recurrent Cannabis use causes failure to fulfill major, daily obligations at work, home, or school. The patient gives up activities such as social, occupational, or recreational because of Cannabis use (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
