Jim Crow And Segregation

Jim Crow And Segregation

This week we will focus on Resistance to Jim Crow and Segregation:

1. Watch the video The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow (In this weeks content) and answer the following two questions:

A. How did Jim Crow impacted the development of free African people in America?

B. Listening to the stories of Ida B. Wells and Booker T. Washington what do you gain from their experiences? How can we use some of this endurance and organization to transform society today?

The Effect Of The Media

Both the Walsh and the Spencer readings posit a symbiosis between the media and terrorists. Explain that symbiosis. What does each party give the other? The Spencer article, in particular, considers the merits of limiting freedom of the press to cover terrorist attacks. What are the pros and cons of such an approach in a democracy? Is that a valid means of mitigating democracies’ vulnerability to terrorism? What do you think of Spencer’s alternative plan to limit terrorists’ ability to use the media to spread their message (changing the verbiage used to describe terrorist activity)? Is that likely to be effective? What are some measures the American press has taken to limit terrorists’ ability to use them?

Social Determinants Of Health

Social Determinants Of Health And Social Science Theories

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read the Moving Upstream: How Interventions That Address the Social Determinants of Health Can Improve Health and Reduce Disparities

In your discussion,

Identify two social determinants of health that you think have the most impact on the health of Americans.
Use scholarly and government research, including national-level data, to justify your choice. Data from .gov websites (e.g. www.cdc.gov (Links to an external site.), www.nih.gov (Links to an external site.), etc.) are acceptable.
In addition, choose one social science theory from those identified in the Week 2 Instructor Guidance.

Describe the key constructs of the theory and use one or two specific examples to discuss how the theory is used in public health interventions to address the social determinant of health that you identified at both state and national levels.
Identify one real-world public health intervention that addresses the social determinant of health you identified in your community.
Use scholarly and government research to justify your recommendations.

How To Do An Informational Interview

  • Watch “How to Do an Informational Interview.”
  • Select your prospective interview candidate. See below for guidance on identifying a suitable interviewee.
  • Gather professional/biographical details about your prospective interview subject.
  • Request an interview by email, by phone, or in person. https://smartwriterblog.com/education-homework-help/how-has-the-construction-of-liberia-and-the-influence-of-the-u-s-shaped-the-way-liberians-see-their-country-and-its-possibilities/ If you’re going to send your request by email, review these email templates for suggested wording. Consider CC’ing me on the request.

To identify a suitable interview subject, find professionals in your career you would like to explore. Think about tapping these sources:

  • Check with your personal and professional networks and professors to connect you with professionals in your field of interest.
  • Check within Community Connect within CareerQuest or the UMUC/UMGC Alumni LinkedIn group for access to potential alumni and mentors.
  • Consider members within student or professional organizations you have joined or would like to join.

There are no restrictions on your interviewee’s location. CareerQuest has a video chat feature you can use if you connect with your subject through that platform.

After you explore your interviewee options, request the interview. https://perfectwriterblog.com/education-homework-help/what-are-the-key-health-policy-issues-concerning-the-adoption-of-health-information-technology-hit/ Reach out in a timely manner, as many professionals have demanding schedules and may not be available right away. It is also wise to consider having more than one potential interview candidate, in case your first choice doesn’t pan out.

As you prepare for your interview, bear in mind these tips:

  • Maintain a professional demeanor, both in writing and orally.
  • Draft a list of questions in advance.
  • Schedule the interview for no longer than 20 minutes.

Part 2 (recommend completing during Week 6)

Prepare for your interview well in advance. In Part 2 of this activity, you will prepare for and conduct your informational interview by completing the following tasks:

  • Determine the logistics of your interview. Will you meet in person? https://blog.keenessays.com/2021/06/30/choose-either-the-artist-or-the-scientist-standpoint-and-explain-why-in-a-consulting-role-you-would-be-more-successful-attacking-the-closing-stage-from-that-standpoint/ Via video chat or web conference (Zoom, Google Hangouts, FaceTime, Skype, etc.)? An interview in real time is preferable, but if you and your subject are unable to arrange that, you can use email.
  • Draft your interview questions. See below for guidance.
  • Conduct the interview.

Here are some questions you might consider:

  • What;
  • sparked your interest in this career field?
  •  does a typical day entail in your line of work?
  •  do you like most about your career field?
  •  are some challenges you face in this career choice?
  • How do you handle your work-life balance?
  • What suggestions do you have for someone who is interested in this field?
  • Who else do you recommend I talk to?

Part 3 (due by the end of Week 7)

After your interview, summarize your notes in two or three paragraphs. Include the name of the interviewee, a short biography  https://perfectwriterblog.com/education-homework-help/what-is-the-self-validation-hypothesis-what-aspects-about-our-thoughts-besides-the-valence-and-number-of-thoughts-we-have-on-a-topic-influence-whether-or-not-we-are-persuaded-by-them/ describing his or her professional background and experiences, and a brief synopsis of your interview details/highlights. Be sure to include a list of the questions that you asked. You may find this template helpful. This documentation is due by the end of Week 7.

Place Matters Discussion thread

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review the Moving Upstream: How Interventions That Address the Social Determinants of Health Can Improve Health and Reduce Disparities (Links to an external site.) article, watch the Unnatural Causes: Place Matters (Links to an external site.) (30 min.) video and then, complete the written assignment.

For your assignment answer the following questions after watching the film, organize your assignment in a series of well-structured Body Paragraphs (Links to an external site.), making certain to address the following content in an order that effectively develops your ideas (do not use bullet points):

Unnatural Causes: Place Matters

  • Summarize the Unnatural Causes: Place Matters
  • When we think about the environment, we usually think about air pollution, water quality, or toxic waste. What other things in our neighborhood environments might also affect our health?
  • How does the film support or contradict the neighborhood factors you listed in the Neighborhood Features Table harm or promote health? What other factors could you add?
  • Why do some neighborhoods expose residents to factors that are protective of health, while others expose residents to factors that can threaten their health?
  • What public policy and private investment decisions have shaped the two neighborhoods in the film?
  • What could be done to improve these neighborhoods in the future so they better promote residents’ health and wellbeing?
  • After watching the film, suggest additions or changes to the Place Matters Discussion in light of what you have just learned. Include features that protect and promote health and wellbeing (Positives), not only risk factors (Negatives).
    • Keep in mind that the Place Matters Discussion thread is the sum total of all student postings, not just the information you added. Therefore, you should suggest additions and changes to the table when viewed as a whole, not just to what you added to the table.
  • Explain, in detail, how the suggested additions or changes would improve the health of your neighborhood.

Texas Government Purple

  1. What is the relationship between education and our Texas government? Here is some background to read:

https://www.texastribune.org/2019/02/15/texas-school-funding-how-it-works/

AND https://everytexan.org/2021/01/27/a-new-division-in-school-finance

2.Should parents have the right to vote on what their children learn in school? Let me explain, our government funds Texas charter schools 100%, but have no oversight on their curriculums. Property taxes fund 54.1% of Texas public schools and the government is telling educators, and essentially taxpayers, they cannot teach certain subjects or topics in Social Studies classes. Is this fair to Texas taxpayers?

NOTE: Charter schools are fully funded by the government, while public institutions must rely heavily on property taxes. Public schools gain funding from the government, but standardized test scores have determined the amount each district receives as of late*. No research states that charter school students perform better than public school students. However, charter schools are funded 100% by the government while disallowing the government to interfere in their lesson plans (Ravitch, 2014, pp. 156-179). HB 3937 limits academia taught in public schools funded by taxpayers.

3.Now the TX legislature has passed House Bill 3937. What is that? What do you think about it?  Why?  https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/87R/billtext/pdf/HB03979I.pdf

HB 3979 was created to replace and ban the teaching of the New York Times’ 1619 Project; does the 1619 Project have a place in Texas government and Texas education? Let me tell you about the 1619 project:

https://www.statesman.com/story/opinion/columns/your-voice/2021/06/17/why-hb-3979-does-grave-disservice-our-students/7702263002

4.Many educators and education advocates opposed HB 3937, but should teachers and education leaders have autonomy over their lesson plans? An opinion: what are your thoughts?

https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/lawmakers-push-to-ban-1619-project-from-schools/2021/02

5.Why is the issue on critical race theory leading to some many heated arguments here in TX and across the nation? Read about what Governor Abbot is doing….

ethics and Performance evaluations

4.8 ethics and Performance evaluations

Your city workforce has been experiencing a rash of ethical lapses. It seems as if nearly everyone, from the janitorial staff to the department managers to the deputy directors, has had an ethics miscue over the past year. As the director of human resources, you feel strongly that it is time to put an ethics component in the annual evaluation of hourly workers and managerial/professional employees. You realize, of course, that your boss must agree and begin to think about how you will make the case to evaluate the ethical behavior of employees. Ah, you have it, why not collect information from cities like yours to identify what others are doing?

After a few weeks of telephone calls and e-mails, you discover that very little is being done, but you do find one municipality that has an ethics component in the annual evaluation of the city manager, the city clerk, and the city attorney. The evaluation instrument asks the evaluator to rate the city manager/clerk/attorney as “Excellent,” “Fully Satisfactory,” “Satisfactory,” or “Unsatisfactory” in response to the statement: “Conducts self in accordance with the ethical standards of the office of Charter Officer.” Disappointed by what you learn, you decide to form a committee to draft language that could be placed on the form to evaluate professional/management personnel. You decide to do the same thing with the hourly employees’ evaluation language but at a later date. The committee takes their assignment to heart and produces the following set of evaluative statements:

ethical behavior

1. Demonstrates an ethical approach in the discharge of duties.

2. Displays ethical behavior—promotes an environment that is open, fair, tolerant, trustful, and respectful. Values public interest over self-interest and is accountable.

3. Clearly understands and communicates ethical practices, policies, and goals relevant to the community.

4. Shows respect for the views of others, takes pride in work products, places public interest over own self-interest.

5. Demonstrates integrity in all aspects of work.

6. Adheres to the city’s ethics code.

7. Demonstrates a clear ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve issues related to ethics. 8. Demonstrates sound ethical judgment and encourages ethical behavior in others.

9. Complies with rules and laws defined by the city Personnel Manual and professional standards and conducts self with integrity while avoiding undue influence.

10. Displays proper attitude toward organizational transparency and has sufficient knowledge of city’s ethical standards.

11. Demonstrates ethical judgment as defined by the city code of ethics or applicable professional standards.

Discussion Questions

1. Which of these eleven statements do you like the best? Like the least? Why?

2. Rank order three statements, with one being the best.

3. Would the list differ in any significant manner for hourly employees?

4. In forming the committee to draft language to be placed on the performance evaluation, what should be the key criteria for membership?

5. Do you anticipate resistance from the workforce about including an ethics component in the annual evaluation? Why or why not?

6. Do you believe that the ethical performance of an employee can be evaluated fairly and accurately? Why or why not?

7. What do you say to persuade your boss that the city should place your preferred statement on the annual performance evaluation form for managerial/ professional staff?

Just War Theory: Then And Now

Just War Theory was created centuries ago to create moral guidelines for nation-states and leaders to determine when the use of war is justified in pursuit of a nation’s interests. Recently, the U.S. pursued a preemptive war in Iraq based on the alleged Iraqi acquisition of Weapons of Mass Destruction. For this paper you will examine the traditional justifications for war with modern justifications for war, and address the following:

· Analyze how Just War theory has been applied to U.S. military campaigns from 1945-1994.

· Discuss ;

any wars conducted by the U.S. during the Cold War period that were not justified by Just War theory, the justifications for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

how the justifications for the U.S. invasion of Iraq hold up under Just War theory. Be sure to explain whether or not these justifications violate any of the tenets of Just War theory.

· Compare traditional justifications for war with modern justifications for war. Be sure to address what has changed and what remains the same when examining the U.S.’s moral justification for war.

The paper must be two to three pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least one scholarly source other than the textbook to support your claims and sub claims. Cite your sources in text and on the reference page.
