Who Am I Called To Be In Light Of My Obligations To Human And Other Life On The Planet?

Activity 3: Essay – Who am I Called to Be in Light of My Obligations to Human and Other Life on the Planet?

Context

Image of journal iconThis learning activity will ask you to discern the ways in which your own identity and vocation are intertwined with your responsibilities to other life on the planet.

Description

Please write a paper that reflects on your answers to the following questions:

· In which ways this week did you observe (or discover) that all life on the planet is interconnected? do you feel that, as a human, you play some role in maintaining the balance that exists in our larger world?

· Based on your thoughts in the two proceeding questions, what do you now feel (or, continue to feel) are your own responsibilities to human and other life on the planet? Does this responsibility become a part of your identity or vocation? How so, or how not?

Visual Analysis

The Analysis Project is focused research  that performs a “close reading” of one of the complete works of  literature or any visual artwork (painting or photograph) included the course modules.

Students also may not substitute outside materials. (For example, just because an artist was discussed for one painting does not mean you may go on the internet and find a different painting by that artist – you must write about the exact artwork presented in the course. Likewise, several poets and writers are presented yet you may only analyze the specific poem or story presented in the course modules.).

Your assignment should offer an analytical interpretation of the work of art or work of literature by having a thesis about what the piece seeks to express and how the artist or author accomplishes this expression formally in its historical context.  The assignment should address the form, content, and context of the work, although not necessarily equally.  .Two outside/secondary sources are required.  (JSTOR, a database accessible through the FSCJ Library & Learning Commons is the best online research tool to find books and articles for Humanities.) You may have more than two secondary sources, although in an assignment of this length, more than four will limit the possibility for you to clearly develop your own voice and present your thesis about the work.  A note on sources: The provided course material does not count as an outside source. Sources are journal articles, books, and quality multi-media, such as video lectures by experts and museum blogs. Sources may be primary (such as a letter or publication by the artist him/herself) or secondary (such as scholarly criticism or historical research). Only one of your sources may be a web-based source, although certainly you may access print sources such as books and journal articles digitally. **Any and all sources must be documented correctly using MLA citation.**  Plagiarism and academic dishonesty are not acceptable; consequences as detailed in the college’s student code of conduct fully apply, including failure of the assignment and referral for disciplinary action. The assignment should be 4-5 pages, at least 800 words and no more than 1250 words, and be typed, double-spaced in MLA format.

negotiable instrument

Discussion 1

Larry London (LL) buys a computer with his new store credit card at Greatest Get (GG). GG immediately sells the right to receive monthly payments from LL to a finance company, Friendly Finance (FF). Unfortunately for LL, the computer stops working three months after he purchased it. As GG won’t return his calls regarding his broken PC, LL stops making payments. Long story short, all stakeholders (LL, GG, and FF) are fed up with each other’s behavior; they all lawyer up.

You are LL’s lawyer. Explain to your client all the possible issues you’ve learned in this week’s material that help and hurt his or her chances of winning a potential lawsuit. Remember to “keep your eye on the ball”. Limit your discussion to this week’s material. For example, you may want to consider whether the parties have a negotiable instrument. If so, what kind? What defenses might there be on that instrument?

Discussion 2

Marvin Mower (MM) is a college student trying to earn a few extra bucks. Marvin mows yards on the side, and he cuts the lawn for Ursula Unhappy (UU). UU writes MM a document for his work. The document acknowledges MM performed work, and that UU owed MM $50. MM doesn’t have time to get to the bank, so MM gives the document to Tommy Thirdparty (TT), who pays him $40 for it.

Predictably, before TT can try to recover $50, UU is unhappy with MM’s work, and refuses to pay TT.

Keeping your “eye on the ball” (limiting your post to this week’s material), discuss all the possible rights and responsibilities these three have to each other concerning the check and the yard.

the Bureau of Prison

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please review the Bureau of Prisons (Links to an external site.) web page. You may also wish to consider some of the recommended resources for this week.

standard contract.

For years, 28 year old Lou Sohn has been trying to make it as a musician. He has played bars from Maine to California, has had some songs he wrote and recorded played on college radio. And was a first round contestant on American Idol, but was cut before making it to Hollywood. He is getting ready to give up the business when a friend arranges an audition for Lou with Ashley Alan Dicker, of ADD Records, a twenty year old record label that has had a few hits, but never broken into the big time.

Lou’s audition seems to go well. Ashley called Lou up a week later and gave him the good news. “Lou, baby,” Ashley said, “I think you’ve got “IT” ADD is going to make you a big star. Who are your manager and lawyer.

Lou tells Ashley he has never had a manager or lawyer before. “That’s a good thing,” says Ashley, “they just waste time and money. Trust me baby, I will be the one looking out for you.”

standard contract

Lou can’t believe his good fortune. Ashley hands him a 15 page contract and says, “Just sign it baby. It is a standard contract. We advance the money for the recordings, we distribute, you get the first $5,000 gross income and then we split everything down the middle .” Ashley hands Lou a shiny gold pen. Lou hesitates. “What’s the matter baby?” Ashley asks. “Well, honestly, I am broke,” says Lou, “Is it possible to get any money up front?’

Ashley pulls out his checkbook. “I like you baby, we are going to do great things. Sign right now and I will give you a $500 advance.” That was all Lou needed to hear. He didn’t even read the contract, he just signed it on the spot.

Lou recorded his first CD for ADD, “Out of My Cave.” It got some alternative rock air play, but never caught on with Itunes. After six months, total sales were only $8,500. Lou wasn’t thrilled, but still, he could use the money. He wrote to ADD and asked for his $5,000 in first royalties plus 50% of the remaining $3,500 for a total of $6,750. ADD’s accounting department responded by sending him a bill:

INVOICE

Recording costs

Studio time $ 3,700

Engineers $ 2,700

Producer advance $ 5,000

Total Recording costs $ 11,400

Promotion costs $ 3,700

Total Costs $15,100

Less credit for sales $ 6,750

TOTAL BALANCE DUE $ 8,350

The hottest movie this summer is the block buster super hero film “The White Knight Ascends.” Lou goes to see it and is shocked to find that “Out of My Cave” is played several times in the movie. It appears ADD licensed Lou’s song to the film for $100,000. When Lou calls ADD to ask about it, he is told that all the licensing money belongs to ADD.

Lou comes to you asking for help. He brings his contract with him. By now he has tried to read it, but cannot make heads or tails of it. In looking it over, you see that some of the relevant provisions are as follows:

“17 C – Sohn agrees to pay, or to reimburse ADD, for all recording costs including, without limitation, all costs related to the use of the studio, hiring of engineers and producers, and all promotion costs.”

“41 F – Sohn grants ADD all rights to the songs written by artist and the Master recordings of such songs as are included on any recordings produced pursuant to this agreement. Without limitation, this shall include the right to license such masters and underlying songs for use in motion pictures. And Sohn hereby waives any claim to the income from such license”

What can Lou do (with your help, of course)? Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of his case.

Difference in The Governance of Long Term Care Depending on Ownership

Barriers to an Effective QI Effort Case

For this Assignment, review Case 3, “Barriers to an Effective QI Effort,” in Chapter 11 of the text, Managing Health Services Organizations and Systems. Reflect on how you, as a current or future health care administrator, might address strategies to implement a quality improvement initiative. Consider the following questions: What considerations should you keep in mind to address quality? How does one measure quality and identify strategies to improve quality in an HSO? Then, review the Week 6 Case Questions document in this week’s Learning Resources to complete the Assignment.

The Assignment (3 pages):

  • Complete the case questions presented.
  • Be sure to provide support from the literature in completing the case questions.
