Charlie and Mike:

Charlie: I need more flexibility to make last-minute changes to the marketing brochure before production. We are paid for our creativity and to produce a quality brochure that will sell our clients’ products. We’ll lose clients if we can’t handle their demands and produce flawless marketing products.

Mike: Last-minute changes frustrate the production staff and are very costly. The client doesn’t pay for these changes, we do. If we don’t get a handle on costs, we’ll have to pass these extra costs on to our clients. But then, we’ll lose our competitive advantage and our clients will look elsewhere.

Executive summaries and abstracts do more than simply summarize the main points of your report. As the first section of the report that your readers will see, they play an important role in the achievement of your report’s purpose. The executive summary/abstract should communicate the information and/or research that is most likely to convince your audience that they should read your report, so the information you include in this opening section should be very thoughtfully chosen.

To help you write an effective executive summary or abstract, read the following articles, then find an executive summary or abstract to analyze based on what you’ve learned.

  3. What report content/sections are included in the abstract? Do you get the sense that this information is important?
  4. What research is included in the report? Does the research included give you the sense that the report is well-researched, credible and/or thorough?
  5. Does the executive summary/abstract convince you that reading the report would be worth your time? Why? Why not?

Commemorative speaking :

Commemorative speaking :

is a form of special occasion speaking, and gives speakers experience in one of our most commonly used speech. A manuscript (essay) format is used instead of an outline because the intention is not to be “informative” or “factual”, but to use stylistic delivery skills that affect the audience more thoughtfully and emotionally. Manuscripts are used for speakers who give speeches at weddings, funerals, graduations, anniversaries, and breaking-ground ceremonies, to name a few. You still want to speak extemporaneously, but a manuscript is used because you don’t want to be searching for words when delivering a speech with emotion.

Time: 3-4 minutes

Prepare and present a 3-4 minute speech that honors or pays tribute to a person, concept, organization or institution. This speech is given from a manuscript so there is no reason for going over/under time.

Visual Aids:

No visual aid requirement for this speech, but you may use them if you choose to.

Manuscript:

You will bring two manuscripts:

  • one you will use during your speech, (marked up with delivery notes, larger font size, color coding, etc.)
  • one is the final draft I will use to follow you as you speak. This needs to be double spaced and proofread to avoid spelling, typographical or grammatical errors.
