Obesity is a serious health problem for many American, Several popular diet plans advocate low-carbohydrate diets. Most low “carb” dieters compensate by eating more protein and fat. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a diet? Should the government regulate the claims of diet books? How should the claims be tested? Should diet proponents be required to obtain and publish data before making claims? Don’t forget to cite your sources.
Here are some additional questions to consider:
- If carbohydrates are eliminated from the body, what will the cells use for fuel for cellular respiration? Will any stored nutrients in the body be utilized?
- What are the problems associated with elevated levels of fat and protein in the diet? Can you see any long-term problems that might develop from this diet?
- What sorts of clinical studies have been done to back up these claims? What was the sample size and were the experiments well controlled?
- Is it the role of the government to regulate every fad diet that appears? Should the government regulate the diet and sport supplement industry to protect the consumer?
