PICO INSTRUCTION

 

 

Purpose: PICO questions are used by practicing nurses and researchers to focus research questions and develop an efficient literature search strategy.  It is essential that future nurses learn how to do this to develop evidenced-based solutions to patient care problems in a healthcare organization.

Instructions:

1. Write a PICO question based on a scenario you choose from the list of scenarios attached below.  Use the templates in the EBP Step by Step 3 article to help create your questions. You may need to do a pre-search to finding an intervention (the “I”) that has been studied and published to solve the problem.

2. Identify the PICO elements for each question.

3. Develop a search strategy using at least 3 keywords from the P, I, and O parts of your PICO, 1 synonym for one of the keywords, and 1 MeSH term for one of your keywords.

4. Locate 4 articles that help answer your PICO question.  The articles must meet the following requirements:

· must be primary source quantitative research articles.

· No article can be older than 2017.

5. Obtain pdfs of the four articles you selected from the school database.  They must show the full text of the entire article. If not available for the School database, you may request access from the school Library, or you can email me the citation for the article, and I will attempt to locate a pdf of it.

Insomnia is one of the most common medical conditions you will encounter as a PNP. Insomnia is a common symptom of many mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and ADHD (Abbott, 2016). Various studies have demonstrated the bidirectional relationship between insomnia and mental illness. In fact, about 50% of adults with insomnia have a mental health problem, while up to 90% of adults with depression experience sleep problems (Abbott, 2016). Due to the interconnected psychopathology, it is important that you, as the PNP, understand the importance of the effects some psychopharmacologic treatments may have on a patient’s mental health illness and their sleep patterns. Therefore, it is important that you understand and reflect on the evidence-based research in developing treatment plans to recommend proper sleep practices to your patients as well as recommend appropriate psychopharmacologic treatments for optimal health and well-being.

    Purpose
    This assignment will help prepare you for conversations with clients with mental health conditions.

    Instructions
    It will be carried out with two students working together. This is a “role-play exercise,” One student is the student nurse. And the other will role-play as a client. In this assignment. The nursing student will demonstrate the therapeutic nurse-client relationship. And analyze the therapeutic and nontherapeutic techniques used. You will take turns in the roles.

    This is not about always having therapeutic responses. It is about learning from practice and review. It is expected that you will think of other ways to respond or interact with the client that may be more therapeutic after the interaction is terminated. After the conversation is over, you will complete in IPR form.

    The client roles are:

    • Mr. Jones is a 69-year-old retired engineer. He was admitted to the in-patient psychiatric unit the previous day. But she has been unable to sleep well and has lost 15 lbs. in the past month. She is a voluntary admission and states she knows she needs help.

    • You will select the role you wish as a client and take turns switching roles. After the conversation, you will document the interactions using the form provided and following the guidelines instructions for each column.

    • The first column is for you, the nursing students, comments/ questions, and responses. You may want to include the introduction process.     • Then, the conversation will focus on the client’s feelings, concerns. Issues as they have identified them. After the introduction, it may be beneficial to establish a short-term goal for the interaction with the client.
