Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to perceive emotions (both our own and the emotions of those around us) understand the causes and meanings of different emotions, and use this knowledge of emotions to guide how we think about and respond to people and situations (Salovey, Mayer, & Caruso, 2004). In 1995, Daniel Goleman brought the concept of emotional intelligence into the business world with his book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. Goleman’s model defines EI as a blend of skills and characteristics that guide leadership decisions and can influence organizational success. In fact, EI has had a tremendous impact on the business world and many organizations worldwide use EI for hiring, promoting, and developing employees (Goleman, n.d.).

As a health care leader, you will face a variety of obstacles and will need to use leadership skills to move teams forward and overcome barriers. Assessing the environment encompasses the morale and needs of individual team members, as well as perhaps the department or strategic business unit. Effective leaders utilize their natural leadership strengths and can enhance results via integration of personal leadership and emotional intelligence.

Your presentation should meet the following structural requirements:

Public Education on Health Matters Response

(Educating the public about health is a great way to improve health. [You] would be amazed at what people do not know in regards to health. I believe that if more resources were allocated into educating the public about various health topics and the benefits of leading a more health conscious lifestyle, preventable health issues (diabetes, obesity, etc.) would decline.

In 1999, Helen Osborn founded Health Literacy Month (HLM). HLM is celebrated annually during October. “It is a time for organizations and individuals to promote the importance of understandable health information” (Osborne, n.d.).

During this time, health care organizations, community centers, government agencies, etc. host a variety of HLM events. Events can include how-to workshops for health professionals, wellness programs, and student educational seminars.

HLM is an awesome way to educate the public and health care professionals, but why does this event have to take place annually? This event could take place once a month or quarterly.)

Frank Federico, Director for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, recommends 8 ways health literacy can be improved:

  1. Ask open-ended questions
  2. Utilize the teach back method – this will insure if the patient has understood what has been communicated to him/her and can repeat the information in their own words.
  3. “Show back”- when a patient is taught how to use a device or complete a specified task, s/he can demonstrate how to use it.
  4. Hand your patient written information upside down and watch whether s/he turns it the correct way.
  5. Use layman’s terms. Avoid using medical jargon when communicating with a patient or his/her family (i.e. swallow instead of take; fats instead of lipids).
  6. Speak slowly when giving instructions. Remember to be respectful, not patronizing.
  7. Use visual aids instead of written materials if possible.
  8. Provide information at appropriate grade level.

Philosophy of Statement of MVHC

Developing a Philosophy, Goals, and Objectives

A philosophical statement communicates values and goals that are based on the vision of an organization. The role of the vision statement in facilitating organizational change has also been examined, with studies finding that companies whose vision statement focused on a desired future state were better prepared for change than those with a vision statement that did not focus on change (Kirkpatrick, 2017). As I continue to review the case study of Mountain View Health Center (MVHC), I believe the ultimate goal is to care for patients regardless of diversity or ability to pay. Developing strategies and systems through mission and visions will help to drive change, build and guide focus to promote an environment of health and healing. Your mission describes what you do for the world while your vision describes what the world looks like once you’ve done it (Engel, 2018).

Philosophy Statement

MVHC believes that every individual should have the right to adequate health care treatment, because their lives matter. We are dedicated to providing the best care utilizing some of the most respected health care professionals. When we give our best, it determines the outcome of every individual that has entrusted their life in our hands. We seek to promote the best care by fostering health and healing into an environment that continues to have hope in the service we provide.

The way will provide optimum care is by keeping our doors open for the community and providing a supportive environment for employees and patients. We will provide education in the community that provides preventive approaches and medicines to help lower the cost of hospital visits. By providing preventative care and approaches, this will empower the community to seek treatment early. Our goal is to promote safety, welfare, wellbeing, and to eradicate sickness. This is done through consistency and continuity of care to all individuals who are in need and suffering from illness.

The objective of the philosophy statement is to create a picture of forward movement in the organization that will improve the delivery of care provided. A well-written statement helps define the organization and its philosophy and can guide and motivate employees to ensure that business decisions reflect the overall purpose and strategy of the organization (Comstock, 2018).

What happens to student-athletes who post prohibited content online?

Each question needs to be 150-200 words with a reference

1) What happens to student-athletes who post prohibited content online?   Social media monitoring services alert athletics department personnel of  inappropriate conduct/communications. An increasing number of  institutions are beginning to use the services of such companies  following the NCAA’s ruling in a 2012 infractions case against the  University of North Carolina in which the NCAA determined that UNC “did  not adequately and consistently monitor social networking activity that  visibly illustrated potential amateurism violations within the football  program.”

The precedent for future cases of social media regulation is  still very much uncertain. Some coaches impose bans on social media use,  which could be construed as potential First Amendment violation. There  have only been a few examples of student-athletes challenging social  media-related suspensions. So far, the courts have primarily ruled in  their favor.  What do you think of the idea of monitoring services?  Do  your opinions change if you view the concept from the perspective of an  administrator, coach, or even a parent?

2) Consider a hypothetical case of an intercollegiate basketball player who  turns her back to the flag during the pregame playing of the national  anthem of a nationally televised game in order to protest U.S.  involvement in a current war.  Would a court be more likely to decide  that the First Amendment protected this student than [for instance]  another student who was suspended by her school for not  removing/covering up a tattoo of a cross that administrators said  violated a rule forbidding the display of gang symbols?  Why or why  not?

Problem that Eclypsis & Cerner Are Having in Getting Adoption

Problem that Eclypsis & Cerner Are Having in Getting Adoption

Market Penetration (Essay)

Eclypsis sells electronic health record systems. The company’s marketing and sales division is having its annual meeting to set goals for the coming years.

At the beginning of the meeting, they review past performance. In a review of the accounts, the senior director of sales breaks down the markets that have been penetrated, saying: “We have done a really good job of penetrating the single-specialty groups like orthopedics and cardiology. I am impressed at your accomplishments. You have all done a really spectacular job, but the real potential is in the multispecialty practices, and we are having difficulty penetrating this market. I am stumped.”

One of the more experienced sales representatives speaks up, “From what I hear, Cerner, our big competition, has the same problem.”

Address each of the following in your paper:

  • Diagnose the problem that Eclypsis and Cerner are having in getting adoption among multispecialty groups.
  • How might this problem be addressed?

Communication Ethical Management

Assess the ethical aspects of a healthcare industry managerial practice.  This analytical paper provides you with an opportunity to think critically about the challenging ethical and moral issues routinely faced by healthcare managers and introduces you to the four principles of medical ethics and the ethical code of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Paper Instructions:

You are a member of your organization’s ethics committee.  At this month’s meeting of the committee, two issues were discussed.  The CEO has asked you to brief the new board chair on the importance of ethics in healthcare, how they differ from other industries, and how they apply to these specific circumstances.  Select one of the two following scenarios as the focus of your analysis.

1.  Hospital policy on influenza immunization.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued an advisory that the coming “flu season” is expected to be unusually severe.  CDC projects a potentially historic level of illness and flu-related deaths.

Response to this, the president of the medical staff has recommended that hospital staff, employees, and volunteers receive mandatory influenza immunizations.  With exceptions for those who are allergic and anyone with a valid religious prohibition against vaccination, those who refuse the immunization would not be allowed to work.  There is a small, but vocal, contingent of employees (including some nurses who are advocating for unionization of the nursing staff) who object to this policy, stating it is an infringement on individual rights and patient self-determination.

What issues should be considered in establishing this policy?  To what groups are responsibilities owed?  What will you recommend to the hospital Board and C-Suite?

2.  Balancing Needs

Your facility is a critical access hospital (CAH) serving a largely rural catchment area.  The next nearest hospital, a comprehensive medical center is several hours distant.

During the monthly utilization review, the emergency department medical director noted a marked increase in cases of renal distress and failure, and that many of these patients do not have health insurance.  They have been treated in accordance with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), the federal statute that requires hospitals to assess and stabilize anyone presenting for emergency services, regardless of ability to pay.

The chief of medical services responds that end-stage renal disease requires ongoing evaluation and treatment, but that this is neither covered by EMTALA nor does the current medical staff have a specialist in this field.

What issues should be considered in addressing this situation?  To what groups are responsibilities owed?  What will you recommend to the hospital Board and C-Suite?

The paper should include separate sections that summarize the relevant issues raised by the case, an explanation of why those issues raise ethical concerns, and how the ACHE Code of Ethics or a similar professional code of ethics can be used to determine the proper response by a healthcare leader.
