Assessment Tool for Individual Leadership Development

Assessment Tool for Individual Leadership Development

Review the assessment tools for individual leadership development (link provided within the topics in this lesson). Based upon your knowledge of the leadership skills needed in the long-term care industry, select ONE assessment tool and complete your individual assessment. Score the tool and review the findings.

1. For your first post, identify the leadership assessment tool you chose, explain why you chose it, and discuss your results.

• Based upon the results, list your individual goals for professional development as a leader.

2. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial posts, providing feedback on their professional leadership goals and consideration of the assessment tools they selected to complete.

Student 1:

Hello Class,

For this discussion I selected the Effective Empowerment and Delegation quiz. My results were in line with the skills that I need for my chosen career, but not necessarily the best for a long term care setting. The test identified modeling the behavior that I want to see, providing information and resources, and delegating as my strengths. I think that these skills are very important both to long term care and my actual career. As a leader you always want to model best practices, in long term care that would mean interacting with residents and staff in a professional and warm manner. Making sure that your staff has all of the knowledge and resources to succeed is key to quality care.

Where the test identified that I needed work was in arousing positive emotions and creating confidence. As someone who is still fairly new to a corporate leadership position these are definitely things that I need to work on. I think that I am very good at recognizing small successes when someone is training, but slack off on regular reminders that they are doing a good job. In my current position, I am focusing on helping my team understand my thought processes for prioritizing work so that they can make good decisions even when I’m not there.

I can see how in a field that is much more emotionally charged like long term care, these frequent confidence boosters would be more important to staff morale.

Assignment Content

This competency will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of prominent sociological theories and how they impact the digital world.

Instructions

You are working for a local department store in the Operations Department. You notice that their business practices and use of technology are not up to date. The Human Resources Department does not have adequate computer access and often requires employees to complete some business at home. They also require prospective employees to apply from home. You recognize that not all people have personal computers. And some might be accessing business and personal records from a public computer. There are two prominent sociological theories that can be used to easily examine computer usage for individuals and organizations. Those theories are Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interaction Theory.

  1.  Sociology in Digital World Health & Medical

At a staff meeting, you and your team are engaged in a discussion about the use of technology. On both an individual and organizational level. You cite the digital divide as a major concern. Your store is considering an upgrade in some or all of their technological resources.
Recognizing that you are technologically savvy. Your supervisor asks you to generate a visual comparison that considers the use of public computers versus a personal computer. You will rank concepts such as ease of use, time, and comfort in completing tasks, security factors. Email management, and safety in conducting business that is typically completed on a computer. That may lead someone to experience the digital divide (a difference between groups of people and their use of digital technology). You will also need to consider the sociological theories named above and explain how from a sociological perspective. It would benefit or hinder the store you work in to upgrade their technology.
Your comparison should consider various factors identified below. And will illustrate the benefits and some potential limitations of utilizing technology. Your presentation will be presented to your supervisor. And other members of the Operations Department in order to determine which, if any. Components of the store’s current technological operations will be updated. The visual comparison can be in any engaging format that you select.
For this comparison chart, you are to reflect upon and address the following sets of questions/information.

    conflict theory.

    • Define conflict theory.
    • Define symbolic interaction theory.
    • Discuss how each of these theories would explain the use of technology and the development of the digital world we now live.
    • Consider multiple ways that society has changed in the past several decades and what contributed to that change.
    • Provide examples of technological growth and change over the past several decades.
    • Make direct correlations between the technologies that exist and the changes that have occurred at the organizational and societal levels in the past several decades.
    • Define digital divide.
    • Consider factors that create the digital divide, such as access to technology, socioeconomic status, age, personal interest, location of residence, etc.
    • Based upon factors that cause the digital divide, suggest ways that this divide can be combated.
    • How does the digital divide apply to the store that you work in for this scenario?
    • Which theoretical perspective can best be applied to your store in the above scenario to help explain and counter the impacts of the digital divide?

Describe The Effect Of Extremely Low Birth Weight Babies On The Family And Community

Describe The Effect Of Extremely Low Birth Weight Babies On The Family And Community

Topic 1 DQ 1

In the United States, nearly 500,000 infants, or 11.7% of all live births, are born preterm (<37 weeks’ gestation) each year. Preterm birth and the sometimes associated prolonged newborn hospitalization are great family stressors, and can lead to subsequent family dysfunction.

All preterm infants are at risk for re-hospitalization, as well as medical and neurodevelopmental complications, even moderate to late preterm infants (born at 32 to <37 weeks’ gestation) . A particularly challenged sub-group is very low birth weight (VLBW) infants or those born < 1500 g. More than 90% of VLBW infants are discharged home from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The burden of continued health and developmental problems faced by these infants is substantial. For example, compared with normal birth weight children. VLBW children face a 2–3 fold greater risk for visual and hearing impairment, speech delays and attention disorders; may have poor feeding and growth, respiratory complications, and face neurocognitive difficulties.

Families of children with birth weights less than 750 g experience more long-term adversity than families of full-term children. Family sequelae are also present for children with very low birth weight at high neonatal medical risk. Ongoing child health and behavior problems may be the major source of these sequelae, and sociodemographic status is an important consideration in identifying family adversity. Although many families appear unaffected, results support the need to monitor family outcomes and develop interventions for both the child and family.

non-Hispanic white women

Filipino, Asian Indian and non-Hispanic black women had the highest incidences of low birth weight, from 6.8 to 7.6 percent of births. Chinese, Korean and non-Hispanic white women had the lowest incidences, from 3.4 to 3.7 percent of births. Considering the effect of birthplace within racial and ethnic groups, Asian women born in East Asia, non-Hispanic black women from Sub-Saharan Africa, and non-Hispanic white women from other developed countries all had lower incidences of low birth weight than women of those racial and ethnic groups born in the U.S.

Being a teen mother (especially younger than 15) or being older than 35 makes you more likely than other women to have a low-birthweight baby. In the United States, black women are more likely than others to have a low-birthweight baby. The rates of babies born with low birthweight each year among different ethnic groups are:

  • About 1 in;
  • 7 black babies (about 13 percent)
  • 12 Asian babies (about 8 percent)
  •  13 American Indian/Alaska Native babies (about 7 percent)
  •  14 Hispanic babies (about 7 percent)
  •  14 white babies (about 7 percent)
