Introduction
In but a few short pages, Kate Chopin gives us the story of an abandoned woman, taken in by an older couple, raised as their own, married to a man of great wealth, bearing a child, and once again being tossed aside – this time with a child.

The twice-abandoned Desiree finds solace in Madame Valmonde both times. Madame Valmonde shows Desiree uncompromised love both as a child and as an adult with her own child. It is Armand who is cold and callous, casting Desiree out because their child shows signs of being multi-racial.

A few questions arise about the way in which Kate Chopin is using race as a symbol in “Desiree’s Baby.”

Initial Post Instructions
How does the reaction to race symbolize Chopin’s assessment of the fragility of love and understanding between men and women? (Consider both Armand and Madame Valmonde’s reactions.)

Is Chopin using the child’s multi-racial features to reveal a secret Armand is desperate to keep or do we automatically assume Desiree is multi-racial simply because she was abandoned as a child?

Introduction
In Greek tragedies, there was always a chorus who served as the population of a given city, a group of soldiers, a collection of servants – a mass of people who had a relevant relationship to the story at hand. This collection of characters was usually of a like mindset or bandied questions among themselves. The chorus often spoke to the audience directly, warning of what was to come and assessing the injustice taking place around them.

Initial Post Instructions
Analyze the extent to which Zora Neale Hurston is using ‘the men’ from town as a Greek chorus in “Sweat.” Are they accomplishing the various goals laid out above, or are they serving another purpose as well?

The story contains an interesting collection of violence. To what extent do you hold Delia responsible for Syke’s death? Do you consider her a murderer?

the American literature “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker

Develop your own argument, or choose from my suggested topics, about a single topic in one of the American literature “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, my thesis for this is: “The  difficulties presented are African Americans’ failure to reconcile their  past with current civil rights, as well as feminism, women’s  empowerment, women’s retention of the culture they discovered, value  creation, and a futuristic element of women.”

Requirements for this assignment are that you must use at least one piece of direct textual evidence per body paragraph. That piece of evidence, in support of your argumentative claim, must be correctly cited and subsequently paraphrased.

Topic: Begin brainstorming topics by simply engaging with the text, skimming sections, and looking for patterns. For topics, a simple character analysis, for example, is just too broad.

trust your ability to write a  sustained, thoughtful argumentative on any of the works in the two identified sections.   I want to be active and engaged in the process of creating and finishing your response project for “Survey  of American Literature II.” This should represent your very best critical thinking,  argumentation, and writing.  Be sure to use the MLA resources folder for assistance with  in-text citation and your works cited page.

The Warden

Twenty years ago, Johnny killed his wife in a fit of rage when he came home one night. And saw her in bed with another man. Based on the mandatory sentencing guidelines at the time of his conviction. Johnny was sentenced to life in prison without any opportunity for parole.

For the past 20 years, Johnny has been a model prisoner. He finished his college degree and worked as a cook in the prison kitchen. One day, a fight in the mess hall between two other prisoners resulted in the death of one prisoner. And several injuries to prison guards. At the time, Johnny was working in the kitchen and took no role in the fight.

After the fight, the warden of the prison imposed a series of punishments. First, the warden ordered a 24-hour lockdown of the prison. This lockdown lasted 10 days, during which prisoners were not allowed out of their cells.

Second, the warden ordered that prisoners be deprived of all “treats” including adult magazines. Reading materials, caffeinated sodas, candy, and desserts; visiting privileges for all prisoners were halted for one year.

Finally, and perhaps worst, the warden decided to isolate the most violent prisoners for an extended period. Because of Johnny’s murder conviction, the warden ordered Johnny to serve six months in solitary confinement.

After doing his time in solitary, Johnny filed an internal complaint with the warden. In his complaint, Johnny argued that the warden’s punitive measures violated his Eighth Amendment rights. The warden denied Johnny’s complaint. And Johnny then filed a complaint in the federal court.

please represent the warden, who is most likely represented by the government.  Show, using case law and other legal arguments, how the warden’s measures did not constitute violations of the Eighth Amendment.

Supreme Court Essay

Complete a case essay on any United States Supreme Court case that involves an interpretation of the Constitution – this encompasses most of the cases that come before the Supreme Court. However, please choose a case that was heard by the Supreme Court from 2009 to the present. Again, please do not choose a case that is older than 2009. This will help ensure that you are writing your essay on current, relevant case law.

– Who is involved in the case?

– How has the case moved through the legal system (who filed it, in what court? What appellate court heard it? How did it get to the Supreme Court?)?

– What was the issue in the case?

– What did the Court decide? (note that the US Supreme Court is called “Court”, not “court” and not “SCOTUS”)

– What was the Court’s analysis (WHY did they decide as they did)?

– Did any Justices dissent, and if so, what did they have to say?

– What is the impact of this case?

If you can’t find a good case, you can always message me for ideas. If you search on Nexis Uni or OYEZ you should be able to find something.

Final Project, Visual Racial Justice

Students will choose one topic, concept, issue or theory discussed this semester and complete a Visual Racial Justice project. They will create a PowerPoint using images that illustrate that concept and upload the final PowerPoint as a .ppt file to Blackboard Learn by the due date listed on the syllabus.

Grading Criteria:

· Each PowerPoint project will consist of FIVE slides ONLY (no more, no less)

1. The first side will include: your name, the name of the class, and the name of concept or theory you chose (or some type of title indicating what your project is about).

2. The second slide will include: the name of the concept/theory you chose, its definition (with book citations) and sentence or two about why this is an important concept to you.

3. The third slide will include: at least one screenshot of an image from a NEWS SOURCE that represents the concept you chose. For instance, if your concept is crime and immigration, you will go to a reputable news source (i.e. not InfoWars or Buzzfeed News) and find an image that represents immigration and crime. You’ll screenshot it so that I can see the source and insert it into Slide 3 on your PowerPoint (more than one is fine, but there must be at least one image). Then, you’ll write at least a paragraph, on that slide, explaining why this image (or images) represents the concept in relation to the definition.

4. The fourth slide will include: at least one screenshot of an image from SOCIAL MEDIA that represents the concept you chose (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc.). You’ll screenshot it so that I can see the source and insert it into Slide 4 on your PowerPoint (more than one is fine, but there must be at least one image). Then, you’ll write at least a paragraph, on that slide, explaining why this image (or images) represents the concept in relation to the definition.

5. The fifth slide will include: an image YOU TOOK YOURSELF that represents the concept you chose. This will be a photo you actually took somewhere around town that represents the concept. For instance, this could be a picture of a bumper sticker, a sign, a building, a business, etc. Then, you’ll write at least a paragraph, on that slide, explaining why this image (or images) represents the concept in relation to the definition.

*Note: screenshots are important here. To do simply right click and save an image. Take an actual screenshot for your news or social media image so I can see the context and source. If you don’t know how to take a screenshot, Google it.

growing marijuana plants

you are to read each scenario below and answer the questions included in each scenario. This is to be ONE page, but you should include a response for each scenario. That is at least one page in length. Feel free to use headings to separate the parts.

Remember to incorporate the elements, or requirements, of the Plain View Doctrine into your discussions and to submit this in APA formatting.

A. In United States. v. Riley, 488 U.S. 445 (1989), the U.S. Supreme Court held in a plurality opinion that police observations of marijuana from a helicopter flying at a distance of four hundred (400) feet above defendant’s greenhouse located in the curtilage of his home did not violate defendant’s reasonable expectation of privacy. As a result, this surveillance did not constitute a “search” under the Fourth Amendment, and no warrant was required. How would you argue that this did violate the home owner’s reasonable expectation of privacy? What if the police instead used a thermal imaging camera to see inside the home to see the use of lighting usually associated with growing marijuana plants? How might the use of a drone in this scenario impact your determination?

B. In United States v. McLevain, 310 F.3d 434 (6th Cir. 2002), officers executing a search warrant for a residence authorizing the seizure of two individuals, one of whom did not live at the residence, found the following items in plain view: a twist tie and a cut cigarette filter under the bed in the master bedroom; a spoon with residue on a tackle box in a sink in the garage (an officer “seized” this residue at the scene and conducted a test to determine if it was an illegal drug); and a prescription bottle, with no label, filled with a clear liquid that looked like water (the bottle was found on a mantle in the home). The court did not admit any of the items as illegal contraband. Why? Change the facts presented here such that the items seized WOULD be admissible pursuant to the Plain View Doctrine.

local law enforcement for security.

Discussion Questions: The CEO of your company would like for you as the security administrator to provide an action plan of the pros and cons of hiring internal security guards or relying on local law enforcement for security. This is a fictional activity so feel free to pick a company or the organization your currently work for or a fictional company. Within the action plan you will need to include the following:

  1. Cost assessment (payroll and overhead costs)
  2. Cost versus reward of internal security guards
  3. Local crime rates
  4. Willingness and ability of your employees to accomplish some additional safety and security tasks over and above their normal duties. Communication techniques for successful “buy in” of employees.
  5. Amount of risk that your organization can assume in the event of an incident without internal security guards.

the value of understanding the human experience in society

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 10 of the course text, watch the video Crime Spotting: Joy of Stats (1/6) (Links to an external site.), review the media piece How Prohibition Encouraged Women to Drink (Links to an external site.) and the journal article, “Bootlegging Mothers and Drinking Daughters: Gender and Prohibition in Butte, Montana”.

In this last discussion, we address mixed methods, which brings together quantitative and qualitative approaches in unique ways. This discussion will support you in understanding the unique application of mixed methods in research. We will also bring the weeks of discussions together by addressing the value of understanding the human experience in society through research and specifically how research reporting can aid our understanding of social phenomena as well as influence social and public policy.

In your initial post, address the following:

  • Discuss the reasons for using mixed methods. Select one of the complex mixed-methods designs (experimental, case study, participatory-social justice, or evaluation). What is an example of a study you might conduct using that particular design?
  • After watching the video Crime Spotting: Joy of Stats (1/6) (Links to an external site.), respond to the following:
  • How does the City of San Francisco currently use its crime data? Explain the value of this data to the citizens in the city and the police service.
  • The level of data collection, police service planning, and community advocacy involved in the program highlighted in the video would add a significant financial cost to city operations. Other than the safety of citizens and supporting police efforts, can you think of two key reasons why San Francisco city leaders would want the city to be safe?
  • As an example of another form of research reporting; we can also be informed of the human experience through a review of historical and secondary data. After reading the media piece “How Prohibition made Women’s Drinking More Acceptable” (Links to an external site.) and the journal article, “Bootlegging Mothers and Drinking Daughters: Gender and Prohibition in Butte, Montana”, respond to the following:
    • Indicate the social problems or issues highlighted in this research article.
    • Explain the experience of women in Butte, Montana during the prohibition. How were their actions a reflection of their social circumstances?
    • How can an understanding of the society of prohibition era Butte, Montana, help us understand society today? What does it say about the effects of public policy on society?

Your initial post should be at least 650 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.
